SCHOOL PICNIC AT BEACH.

The Whareroa annual school and settlers’ picnic, was held recently at Ohawe Beach. The morning broke with a boisterous wind and cold, driving shdwers, much to the disappointment of the children. A number braved the elements and were much gratified when the weather cleared and a warm, sunny afternoon was spent on the beach. Ohawe beach is in better condition this summer than for many years, with a good length of sand. The children spent the afternoon in sports and sea-bathing. Each child received a present from the committee, which was indefatigable in its efforts to give all a pleasant time. Fruit, sweets and cakes were provided by the committee. The school teacher, Miss Kennedy, resides at Ohawe beach and motors back and forth daily, picking up a number of children and taking them to and from the school. The school attendance is less than usual, due no doubt to the age limit being raised to six years. Whareroa has been visited lately by a sneak thief who has been stealing benzine and other articles left in the milking sheds. The cowshed on Mr. Les Pinny’s farm was visited and about 20 gallons of benzine was taken from a drum. Mr. Nelson’s shed was also visited, but the thieves did not get such a haul there, taking only a few gallons of benzine and some motor oil. The bountiful rains have given the pastures a wonderful start for autumn growth and should ensure a plentiful supply of grass to keen up the milk supply. PERSONAL. Miss Ava Hicks is staying with friends at Ohawe beach. Mr. Patterson, Manawapou Road, has been an inmate of a Hawera private hospital, where he underwent an operation from which he is making a good recovery. Mr. W. Johnson has returned home after an operation in a private hospital and is making good progress. Mrs. J. Haynes has returned to Shannon after spending a holiday with her mother, Mrs. H. Wells. Miss Eileen Wells is making a good recovery after a long illness. Mrs. Wilson and family, South Road, have recently returned from a holiday spent at New Plymouth with Mrs. Nelson’s mother, Mrs. Pickle. Misses Nora and Annie Thomlinson are spending a vacation at Rotorua and Auckland. Mrs. Ballantine Senr. has been indisposed for some time but is better again. Mr. Ivan Ballantine had an' accident with benzine. He had been filling a container with benzine and some spilt on his hands. Later he struck a match and the petrol fumes flared up and burnt his hands. He was lucky that he had left the container or the accident might have been more serious. GENERAL ITEMS. The annual picnic of the South Taranaki Provincial Farmers’ Union- was held at Kaupokonui beach on Saturday. The grounds, which were made available by the courtesy of Mr. A. Gamlin, looked delightfully fresh with a growth of young grass due to the recent rains, and a very enjoyable day was spent. The gathering was not as large as on former occasions, but it was representative of all branches of the union in the district. Races for the children, sports, sweets scrambles, swimming and diving formed the chief attractions, and the weather was ideal for a holiday. Surf bathing was good, the breakers being large and strong. The provincial president, Mr. E. J. Betts, the secretary, Mr. E. K. Cameron, and members of the executive were present. Among the visitors was Mr. H. Betts senr., who recently celebrated his 96th birthday. Close Cricket at Manaia.
