PROPOSED RESTRICTIONS
BUTTER FROM DOMINION
NO INFORMATION IN LONDON
MARKING SCHEME OFFERED
PRIVATE BILL TALKED OUT
By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. London, Feb. 17.
Sir Thomas Wilford, New Zealand High Commissioner, is silent concerning the proposed restrictions on the export of New Zealand butter, but admits that all the butter-producing Dominions were recently in close touch with the Dominions Office. Mr. S. M. Bruce, Australian Resident Minister, denies the Australian reports that he has made representations to Cabinet Tor a 10 per cent, reduction in Australian dairy exports to Britain. The Press Association understands that there is no decision on- the issue at present, but it is a mistake to believe that the present negotiations with the Dominions have arisen from Britain’s previous negotiations with Denmark, Argentina and other producers. The fact is that the bottom has fallen out of the market and in the interests of the British producers something must be done and a restriction is an obvious possibility. In the House of Commons Captain F. F. A. Heilgers (Conservative) moved a private Bill requiring that all imported foodstuffs exposed for sale should be marked with the country of origin. He said the Bill would safeguard countries which had built up goodwill on the English market and enable the purchaser to discriminate against countries .producing under notoriously bad conditions. Furthermore, the Bill would give the Dominions the full benefit of the Ottawa agreements. Major W. E. Elliot, Minister of Agriculture, said the Government at present was considering reorganising marketing, and therefore it was undesirable to change the procedure. Meanwhile he sympathised with the principle of marking, but the Bill was contentious and required a financial resolution. The Bill was talked out.
