Napier, Last Night.. , The New Zealand national swimming championships opened at Napier last evening under perfect conditions. The 100 yards men’s championship re- //.; suited in an excellent race with R. Frankham (Auckland) winning by two feet from W. Whareaitu (South Auck- //// land). E. McConville (Canterbury) was a close third and R. Thomas (Auckland) ./ • was fourth. The 220 yards ladies’ cham- i t pionship title changed hands, Miss M. Leydon (Auckland), who swam a great /< race, defeating the title-holder, Miss.M. ’ Farquhar (Auckland), by. a yard in ope second over record time. The 150 yards ,-y men’s backstroke championship .went to G. Low (Canterbury), who was never troubled. L. J. Moorhouse (Canterbury), record and title-holder, could hot compete owing to an indisposition. D. ' P. Lindsay (Canterbury) had no trouble in retaining his mile title from A. T. 1 /. Stokes (Canterbury), gaining a yard every length. A greater degree of consistency was the reason for R. C. Calder (Otago), winning the men’s diving chain- /'/ pionship for still another year, A. W.
