NOTES ON THE RACING
GOLDEN WINGS IN FORM ‘ PESCHIERA IS IMPROVING. TENACRE’S HURDLES WIN. W. Grindlay gave another fine exhibition of riding when he won the Fordell Hurdles on Tenacre. He rode a very patient race, never covering a yard of unnecessary ground and came through on the fence at the turn for home to score decisively. Riotous registered his third successive second. He was always handily placed and took command three furlongs from home, but just failed to hold off the winner. Jayson was not artistically handled, being pushed up to the front after going a couple of furlongs. He lost ground at the second to last fence. Calamine went well and might have taken a hand in the finish with a little more luck at the final obstacle. Invictus never looked likely over the last half mile. Arena AU the Way. Arena jumped out smartly, and though Wharaurangi headed her temporarily after passing the three furlongs, she took command again and looked like scoring comfortably, but she tired over the last 50 yards and it was .L. G.' Morris’ vigorous riding that landed her home in front ■ Welcome Lu had to cover some extra ground, being on the outer all the way. She finished very strongly - and failed only by the narrowest ,of margins’ to get to the winner. Wasteland failed to act up to his first day’s showing arid was never going like a winner. Wharaurangi, the first of the progeny of the. Tea Tray horse Kiosk- to race, showed an abundance of pace but stopped badly, in the run home. ,• ’J Arvada Makes Amends. , After a series of failures since winning a double ’at New Plymouth at Christmas, Arvada came to light to carry off the Brunswick Handicap in good style. She was in front after they had gone a furlong and was never afterwards troubled, staying on really well in the straight Nevertheless View Halloo looked a good /thing, beaten. He was on the outside of Pomp and Green Linnett along the back and then went back to last at the entrance to the straight He could not get dear until 100 yards from home, but then he fairly flew. He cut Green Linnett and Ppmp down over the last 20 yards to get second by a neck. Green Linnett ran up to her first day’s form. She appeared to have a good chance as; they turned for home, but did not finish as well as on Thursday. Pomp was in the picture all the way and faded only over. the last 50 yards. Bayacre again ran a good race- and- was well up at the finish. Voitre 1 ® Fine Riding. Eminent scored his .third ;win in four ’ starts When he won the Wanganui Handicap in convincing, fashion. Voitre had him on the rails in a handy position all the way and then, moving out as they turned for home, came with a welltimed run to win by a neck. Brambletorn, who was much improved by his first day’s outing, gave a taste of his real worth. He was last after they had gone a furlong but, making a great ran from the half mile, hit the front soon after entering the straight He just failed to hold off the winner. It was unusual to find Richfield in the leading division all the way. Evidently the effort was too much as he was stopping at the end. Shrewd never managed to get to the front, being pocketed in about sixth position most of the way. He was finishing on in fourth place ,at the end. Grand Jury faded out after leading to the’home turn. High Falutin’ was kept up to his task to hold his position in the early stages, and his usual finishing run was conspicuous by its absence. Navaho’s Comfortable Victory. Navaho is undoubtedly a much improved hack and he scored in the Okoia Handicap in rather easy fashion. Pine always had him in a handy position and had no trouble in going to the front a furlong from home. He went on to score comfortably. Clangor was slightly unlucky at the home turn, where he was running along well just behind the leaders. He was about to move out when Pine ’ moved Navaho up smartly and closed the opening. Morris then had to come right round, and though the three-year-old finished gamely he could not make up the leeway. Davistock was in the rear Until the straight was reached, when he came home strongly on the outside. Beaconsfield and Arikitea failed to stay on after leading into the straight. Golden Wings’ Great Pace. Jumping out smartly from Number 1 position in the Carnival Handicap, Golden Wings waited on. the field to the turn and then strolled away to win as he liked. This was his, first win since his dual successes at Ellerslie in November, and it was achieved in. stylish fashion. He lumped his big weight like a real horse and the result would have been the same had the distance been six furlongs. Aston did not begin as brilliantly as usual but ran into second position at the straight entrance and hung on well to get second. Arisus had. every chance but did not finish bn. Midinette lost too much ground at the ■ start to have, any chance. Royal Routine stopped badly over the last, furlong. Fcschiera’s Good Finish. Peschiera won like a good colt. He has improved steadily since winning at Waverley and looks like doing a lot better yet. He was about sixth when the field settled down but gradually improved his position. There were still four -in front of him at the turn. He finished on in great style. Young Wally Pine made a great effort to win on Bonnie Vale and a furlong from home he looked a winner, but Peschiera • was just too good. Might was bustled along too much in the early stages and he did not finish on. • WIN AND PLACE BETS AT TROTS. RACING RULES ’FOLLOWED. Christchurch, Feb. 18. The executive of the New Zealand Trotting Conference has authorised clubs to instal the “win” and “place’’ totalisetor for their meetings, in accordance with regulations issued by the New Zealand Racing Conference.
