MANY YEARS IN DISTRICT
AN ARRIVAL IN 1868. An early resident of Normanby is Mr. B. P. Harrison, who went to the district 65 years ago. Mr. Harrison was born in
New Plymouth, his father having come out on the first boat to the province, the William Bryan, and his mother on the second, the Amelia Thompson. At the age of 18 Mr. Harrison secured employment with contractors on the Waingongoro stretch of the South Road. Later he worked on the Goodson estate. At that time there were practically no fences except some round Captain Blake’s house
Wild pig hunting was then the principal diversion of young' men. Concerts ana dances were practically unknown. A race meeting was organised which in later years drew some quite fair horses from Wanganui. Mr. Harrison can remember the fertility of the early bush clearings, when cape gooseberries and peaches grew much better than they do now. He attributed this to the shelter of the standing bush, tor at that time the climate seemed much more equable.
