WANGANUI RACES TO=DAY

ALL.EVENTS VERY OPEN ————. emsnents bright prospects. U VIEW HALLOO’S FAVOURED COURSE (By "Hurry On. 1 *) Though th® fields for the opening of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s autumn meeting are not large, the class of horse engaged is good and all the events bear j ? a very open appearance. There are only seven races on the card and proceedings will not commence until 12.45. Taranaki stables are not as strongly represented as usual, hut the province’s representatives are a well-conditioned lot who should take their share of the stake 4 money. The 4 a Y starts with the '■ WESTMERE HURDLES. Of £lOO. About one mile and a-half. Easterley- 11 10 Invictas 9 7 Tenacr* ■ • Wl3 Calamine 9 4 Jayson 10 13 Marjoram 9 0 Biotoue 10 0 Easterley has a big weight, but she won so decisively on Saturday that she must be entitled to a lot of respect. ’ Jayson is a newcomer to the circuit, but he would have to improve on his showings at Trentham to win. Tenacre ran a solid race at New Plymouth and usually races well on this course. Riotous ran Easterley to a head on Thursday last and now meets the Acre mare on much better terms. Calamine should account for both Invictas and Marjoram. / Riotous ’will probably be a little better fancied than Easterley and Tenacre. JUVENILE HANDICAP. Of £75. Five furlongs. Dtatomous 9 3 Welcome Lu 7 7 Golden Hair 9 2 Boon 7 3 Might sl3 Wharaurangl 7 2 i Arena 8 9 Bold Baron 7 0 Wasteland 8 6 Hard Forrard 7 0 This gives every indication of being a great contest. Despite his failure at Trentham Diatomous has every right to be considered one of the best of his age, while Golden Hair by her fine victory on Saturday has shown herself to be a high-class youngster. Might also scored in an impressive manner at New Plymouth, while Welcome Lu ran really good races each day. Arena is speedy over this distance and Wharaurangi did not shape badly at Hawera. Probably Golden Hair, Diatomous and Might will be supported in that order. TAYFORTH. HANDICAP. Of HOG. Seven furlongs. Arisus a 9 Gaupat 8 8 Bayacre . # 5 Green Linnet 8 4 Royal Bengal 8 W ■ Arisus and Bayacre are two class horses but it is probable that they may be in need of a race. Royal .Bengal ran a splendid race into second place behind Eminent on Saturday, and Green Linnet failed only over the last furlong. Ganpat has always proved himself more ' than useful over this distance. Every, one •of the quintette has a chance, but probably backers will pin their faith to the Taranaki pair Royal Bengal and Green Linnet. EARLE STAKES. Of £2OO. One mile and a-quarter. High falutin 810 Eminent 713 Brambletorn 8 9 Grand Jury 7 11 ... First Acre 8 6 Bhrewd T 2 High Falutin’ invariably races well when fresh, and the small field here will be in his favour. Brambletorn may not start, as he has not done much work since his injury on Saturday. First Acre usually requires a race or two before coming to his best. Eminent is right at the-top of his form. He-won twice last week and will be fancied. Grand Jury has not shown any form since the Waverley Cup but Shrewd won on the second day at Hawera. The most favoured will probably be Eminent, High Falutin’ and Shrewd. VICTORY HANDICAP. Of £BO. Eight ■furlongs and a-half. Navaho 9 2 Beaeomsfleld 8 0 Arikitea 8 4 Morrath 7 2 Davistock 8 0 Navaho’s good and consistent form at Trentham will draw attention to his chances here, but it is 'doubtful if he can give 121 b. to Arikitea, who was very unlucky in the Nolan Hack at Hawera. Davistock does not seem able to muster the necessary dash at the finish, but Beaconsfield, should he v reproduce the form he displayed at Awapuni at Christmas, .would be dangerous. Morrath does not appear quite good enough. Arikitea should have a good call over Navaho when the machine closes. FLYING HANDICAP. Of £125. Six furlongs. View Halloo 9 1 Hunt the Arisus 8 .9 . Slipper ■■ 712 Royal Routine 8 3 Aston 7 0 1 Fbmp 7 13 Arvada 7 0 View Halloo is a great horse on this track and has won on his last three starts there. He does not need a race to tune him up and will be running on when the rest are stopping. Arisus will probably tackle the easier race earlier in the day, but Royal Routine and Pomp are a very speedy pair whose prospects look bright. Hunt the Slipper will be having his first outing for some months and will be all the better for his outing. Neither Aston nor Arvada makes much appeal. View Halloo will probably be better backed than Pomp and Royal Routine. • PETRE HACK HANDICAP. .. Of £BO. Six furlongs. Gold Gleam 8 8 Lady Court 7 2 Clangor 8 5 No Humbug 7 0 Haulbowline 7 12 Waiforte 7 0 Peschlera 711 Bonnie Vale 7 0 Nebtflac 7 8 Dakar 7 0 Gold Gleam is very speedy out of the tapes and this is a big asset on this course. He should have no trouble in out-staying Haulbowline. Peschiera is improving and he can run the distance right out.- Nebulae ran two really good races at Trentham. Clangor won over a distance of ground both times last week, but he can begin well enough to have a good chance here. Of those at the bottom of the handicap Dakar and Bonny Vale may. do best. Gold Gleam, Clangor and Peschiera should fight out the finish. FINAL GALLOPS AT WANGANUI. BRAMBLETORN LIMPS SLIGHTLY. Wanganui, February 15. The weather was fine for the final gallops this morning. S. Reid arrived yesterday with Might, Clangor and Eminent. Other arrivals included Shrewd and Brambletorn. The last-named limped‘slightly going out, but moved freely, covering a round and finishing up by running the last three furlongs in 395. Welcome Lu did a circuit, the last two furlongs in 25 l-ss. ' Pomp and Midinette were associated over half a mile, registering 49 4-ss. and finishing together. Gold Gleam ran five furlongs in Im. 4s. Shrewd did a round at half-pace and then seven furlongs in Im. 325. Eminent, Clangor and Might were given pace work with a sprint down the straight. Ganpat, No Humbug and Arisus did useful work.

Tenacre was scratched for the Westmare Hurdles at 10.5 a.m. to-day.

The New Zealand Trotting Conference has circularised all the trotting clubs asking them urgently to express an opinion on the desirability of the rules being amended to permit of the early introduction of win and place betting. Most of the clubs have held meetings, and all of these have decided in favour of the new method. As only'a two-thirds majority is needed to enable the conference executive to widen the present betting regulations to permit of the win and place system being used it now seems certain that the necessary amendments to the rules will be made. At present trotting clubs may pay three dividends on a certain number of starters, but the proportion has been fixed at 70, 20 and 10 per cent, respectively for first, second and third. Under the new system, the proportions would revert to 33 1-3 per cent fdr each placed horse. It will not be compulsory for clubs to adopt the win and place system because they have expressed approval of the new rule; it will simply enable action to be taken almost immediately. The New Brighton Trotting Club has decided to retain the old method for its meeting to be held on February 25, but if the new rule is passed, the Ashburton Trotting Club will adopt the win and place system at its April meeting. Permission to operate win and place betting at the meeting which opens at Epsom on Saturday having been granted by the New Zealand Trotting Conference, the committee of the Auckland Trotting Club has now in hand plans for the necessary alterations to the totalisator buildings. The Taranaki Trotting Club sent in its reply in favour over a week ago, and in view of the anticipated alteration is arranging for the new system at its meeting on April 22. WANGANUI SCRATCHINGS. Wanganui, Last Night. Tenacre and Invictus have been scratched for the Wanganui races. WIN AND PLACE AT CHRISTCHURCH Christchurch, Feb., 15.. The New Brighton Trotting Club has decided to adopt win and place betting for its meeting on February 25 and the Metropolitan Club will put the system into operation at its Easter meeting.
