POLO TEAM TO TRAVEL

DECISION OF THE CENTRE. TARANAKA AT CHAMPIONSHIPS. That a Taranaki water-polo team should be sent to the national swimming championships at Napier, commencing next Saturday, was the decision made at a fully attended meeting of the Taranaki Swimming Centre at New Plymouth last night. Mr. F. J. Eggleton presided. On the decision to send a team being made' Miss B. Gayton, the secretary, communicated by telephone with Napier and entered the team. . The players will leave Taranaki on Sunday morning, play each of the other teams—-probably Auckland, Wellington and Canterbury-Hm Monday and Tuesday and return on Wednesday. The centre will not be required to expend more than £lO Ils, and only the polo seven will be sent. Mr. R. Crossman (Inglewood) made the suggestion that a team should be sent, first asking the centre to reconsider its attitude of the previous meeting, when the proposal to send a team, made in the absence of any delegates from clubs outside New Plymouth, was rejected on the score of expense. Taranaki wanted the New Zealand championship meeting at New Plymouth .in 1935, said Mr. Crossman, and the centre should do something towards attaining that end by sending representatives to Napier. Mr. Eggleton said he did not think that factor entered into the question at all. Only the best swimmers should be allowed to compete at the championships. He would like to see Taranaki represented but they knew the province’s best swimmer would “plug along last.” He suggested concentrating on the, juniors and intermediates for next year and perhaps the engagement of a coach. “What would be the cost?” inquired Mr. Eggleton. Mr. R. A. Petty (New" Plymouth): £39— Mr. Crossman: £l5. Mr. .Petty, detailed expenses but Mr. Crossman stated that the Inglewood club would guarantee to transport the

seven players to Napier and arrange their: • J board for a total cost, to the centre, of ■ not more than £LQ Ils. The Inglewood club would itself- donate another £5.

Mr. C. H. Stephenson f (Opunake); thought it was an exceedingly good offer < but pointed out it was also necessary ta 'send a “live” delegate to " the conference.

Mr. Wk A. Spragg (Hawera) said his, club was keen on sending a team, but considering the distance and the resui« tant cost they did not see how it could, be' practicable. >

Mr. P. J. Flannagan; What is the idea-** to give the boys a holiday? .* Mr. Eggleton thought the scheme, should be workable and successful as outlined. ’

Mr. Crossman moved that a team be ‘ sent to Napier provided it was hot too 1 late to enter, that the cost to the centre t should not exceed £lO Us and that the! team include a representative to the con* ference. Mr. Bennett (Eltham) second*' ed and the, motion was carried' on the,' casting vote of the chairman after five had been recorded for and five against. , The team, chosen by the selectors(Messrs. S. Bennet, north, and W. T. Kivell, south), after' the North V. 1 South match on January 25 in of last night’s decision being made, will. be: Goalkeeper, W. J. Toomey (Fitzroy/. A); backs, C. Maclean (Fitzroy B) an<i : C. Evans (Inglewood);’ centre half, W<r T. Kivell (Inglewood);, forwards, H. J. Thomas (Fitzroy A), A. Ryan (Hawera) and R. Crossman (Inglewood). No emergencies have been selected, but in the event of any of the above being unable to travel the selectors will confer. Messrs. Kivell and Toomey were appointed delegates to the New Zealand conference and Mr. Kivell will be manager of the team from the time it leaves Taranaki on Sunday morning to the re- i turn on Wednesday afternoon.

Following the decision of, the centre. the secretary telephoned to the seejetarx / of the Hawke’s Bay centre, Mr.' ’ Bas, who accepted the entry and that the com'petition was 'being'arranged by himself and Mr.- _C. ■Atkinson on a points system, all the others. That wouldfniean at least three games for the Taranaki'team.' '■
