TARANAKI SWIMMING CENTRE

REMITS TO CONFERENCE. INSTRUCTIONS TO. THE. DELEGATES. The attitude of the Taranaki Swimming Centre and its delegates, Messrs. W. J. Toomey (New Plymouth) and W. T. Kivell (Inglewood), towards the business of the annual meeting of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association at Napier was decided on at a meeting of delegates at New Plymouth last night. Those present were- Mr. F. J. Eggleton (in the chair), Mrs. E. Govenlock (Okato), Miss Allan (Ladies’ Live-saving Club), Messrs. P. J. Flannagan, J. Devine (Flannagan Cup committee), J. Shimmin (primary schools), R. Crossman, W. Yeates (Inglewood), R. A. Petty (New Plymouth), N. Berge (East End), C. H. Stephenson (Opunake), W. A. Spragg (Hawera), R. Clayton (Fitzroy), Bennett (Eltham) and Miss B. Gay ton (secretary). A letter from the Primary School Sports Association notifying the appointment of Mr. J. Shimmin as the association’s delegate was received, and the association’s application for the afternoon of February 25 and the morning of March 4 as the dates for the primary schools championships. A judge of diving will be appointed by. the centre, Mr. D. Sykes to be approached- : • Programmes for Inglewood, Stratford and Hawera carnivals were submitted to the centre, and on the motion of Mr. Stephenson .were read. The programmes were approved. The Hawera club was granted permission to stage at the carnival on February 28 an interprovincial relay between Taranaki and Wanganui and a polo match between representative Taranaki and Wanganui teams. Messrs. R. Watson and M. Smale were appointed to select the eight men, required to swim 25 yards each, for Taranaki, and the Taranaki polo team will be selected by Messrs. S. Bennett and W. T. Kivell. Hawera was also given permission to hold an invitation 100 yards race between St George, Haughton and Blyth from Taranaki and three Wanganui swimmers.

Remits to the N.Z.A.S.A. annual conference were discussed and instructions to the centre delegates decided. The Auckland centre’s remit that application for senior championships be confined to Auckland, Manawatu, Wellington, Wanganui, Canterbury, Otago and Southland will be opposed strenuously. The delegates will be left to vote as they think desirable on the allocation of the 1934 senior championships to Auckland, Canterbury or Southland, with preference to Canterbury, and will be given a free hand in voting on the allocation of the intermediate championships either to Hamilton or Palmerston North. The centre will support the addition of a junior boys’ dive to the championship programme.

It was decided to support a remit that school certificates be granted free of charge.

' A Wellington remit that voting power at the annual conference should be on a percentage basis .will be opposed. The addition of a 50 yards New Zealand championship, proposed by Hawke’s Bay, will be voted on by the delegates as they think fit.

A movement for a reduction in the price of the New Zealand handbook will be supported.

The delegates will be given a free hand in the matter of the suggested permanent suspension of the Is. overseas fund capitation fee. Mr. Spragg brought up the matter of the distance to be travelled by South Taranaki club delegates to the centre meetings and said he imagined expenses could be pooled by all clubs to arrive at a more equitable position. It was decided to discuss the matter at the next annual meeting. ' To raise the standard of diving in the province* said Mr. R. A. Petty, there should be a scheme instituted whereby the centre could issue a list of 12 dives at the beginning of the season, from which clubs would select the dives required for carnival events. The matter was left to the annual meeting. Mr. F. J. Eggleton asked for the support of clubs outside New Plymouth in the control of leam-to-swim week in the smaller towns. It was desired to make the movement a provincial one, and if' the clubs in towns the centre could not organise would help the object would be attained.
