SAVINGS BANK WITHDRAWALS

IMPROVEMENT SHOWN LATELY. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night.

The Postmaster-General (the Hon. A. Hamilton) was asked by Mr. R. A. Wright (Wellington Suburbs) in the House of Representatives to-day if he could say whether deposits in the Post Office Savings Bank were still being heavily drawn upon by depositors who had found themselves financially embarrassed. Mr. Hamilton said that for many months deposits in the savings bank had not equalled withdrawals, but in view of the widespread depression, that had been expected. ; . . ;■ Since July last the position had been improving steadily, no doubt owing .to depositors’ attempting to make provision for any further depression. Last month there had been a surplus of deposits over withdrawals of £25,000 and for the present month withdrawals (usually heavy at the beginning of the month) had been very small indeed. .
