REMARKABLE RECOVERY

MAN WITH FRACTURED SPINE. DISCHARGE FROM HOSPITAL. Another case of a man recovering, from a fracture of the spine stands to the Auckland Hospital, Mr. G. W. Cullen, a young farmer, of Wellsford, was admitted to hospital on December 22 suffering from a fracture -near the top of the spine. His condition was serious, as such cases a few years ago were generally regarded as hopeless, but he was discharged from hospital yesterday well on the. way to complete recovery. Mr. Cullen received his injury while using a high hoist for stacking hay. A wire stay snapped and the heavy mast crashed down across Mr. Cullen’s back. Considerable care had to be taken in transporting him to the hospital, and for welts he was kept lying still on his back, with a framework to keep him in a stationary position. As with a number of similar cases recently, the fracture mended quickly and Mr. Cullen during the last few days has been able io walk about the hospital. However, to guard against any possible strain, he will have to wear a heavy protective collar for some time, Mr. Cullen pays a glowing tribute to the efficient and kindly treatment he received from members of the honorary and resident staffs of the hospital, and also from the nursing staff. He had no hesitation in saying that he owed his life to them.
