TARANAKI RACES

GOLDEN HAIR’S FINE WIN FIVE WINNERS SCORE AGAIN EMINENT AND REFRESHER MEETING ENDS IN SHOWERS The Taranaki Stakes at the New Plymouth races on Saturday again provided a magnificent race, attracting a small but select field, in which the Juvenile Handicap winner of the previous day, the brilliant Hawera two-year-old Golden Hair, scored attractively from. Golden Wings, with Midinette only a head away. " Lady Quex, last year’s winner, was last. <•' On returning to scale Golden Hair received an ovation, though she was the outsider of the field, the public appreciating the merit of her performance. During the last 10 years that it has been contested the , Taranaki Stakes has only once previous been won by a two-year-old— Ammon- Ra in 1931. The Paul Memorial Handicap saw the cup winner, the Trentham-trained Eminent, always well placed, repeating , the first day’s performance to. win by half a length in a field of eight from Royal Bengal and Green Linnet. The Urenui Handicap, the open seven furlongs, was won by the favourite, Refresher. Form proved exceptionally good to follow on Saturday, as Clangor and Easterley also repeated their first day’s successes, while in the last race King Win improved on his third of the first day to pay a first dividend. Despite that the public, though never far astray, correctly sorted, out only two favourites. The weather was not too pleasant, occasional westerly showers from prior to the start of the first race doing their ’ best to mar proceedings. The meeting . proved a distinct financial success, however, the gate being well up to the second day of last year, when the weather was ideal, while the totalisator,- in charge of Mr. L. Rea, handled £9522 5s for the seven races, as against £8965 10s for the eight races on the second day last year, an increase of £556 15s. The total for the meeting was £17,351, compared with £"14,380 for the two days last autumn, an increase of . over 20 per cent. From the point of view of sport the meeting- proved very enjoyable, fields being again of a handy size. Only in one race, the stakes, was the field of onedividend and there were two three-divi-dend races. -Despatches generally were good and finishes were close. At the starting barrier Brambletom, the favourite in the Paul Memorial Handicap, re- ’ ceived a severe kick from Glenvane, and took no part in the race. In the Mokau ’Hack Handicap, when the field was despatched La Crown was left and took no . part in the race. Messrs. C. Gomer, senior stipendiary steward, was present, but he found need for only one enquiry. The trainer of .Might, the winner of the Pari tutu Juvenile, was asked to explain the improvement shown by the colt on the previous day’s form'. After hearing the explanation of the trainer (S. J. Reid) and the jockey (K. F. Voitre),. which Was to the effect that the colt lost a lot of ground owing to being unbalanced at ■i the start of the race, the stewards ac-. cepted the explanation. Reid, on be- ■ half of Mr. Riddiford, the owner of the horse, thanked the stewards for giving him the opportunity of making the explanation. The Taranaki Regimental-Municipal band provided an enjoyable programme of music. Results are:—
