Professor G. S. Peren, principal of Massey Agricultural College, Palmerston North, is on holiday at New Plymouth.

During the absence of Sir Ronald Lindsay, British Ambassador to the United States, from Washington Mr. d’Arcy Osborne will become British Charge d’Affaires, states a cable message. Mr. H. Gilmore Smith, Registrar of the Supreme Court, who has been on holiday leave for some weeks, is expected to return to New Plymouth to-night and resume his duties to-morrow.

Messrs. R. J. Quinn and G. H. Bell left New Plymouth yesterday for Palmerston North, where they will attend a meeting of the committee of the New Zealand Jersey Association.

The Canterbury College Board of Governors received the resignation of Professor T. G. R. Blunt, holder of the chair of modem languages yesterday, states a Press Association message. Professor Blunt has occupied the chair since 1901.

The death of Professor George Saintsbury, aged 88, is reported in a London cable. Professor Saintsbury was Professor of rhetoric and English literature at Edinburgh University from 1895 to 1915. He wrote many books, historical and critical, on literary subjects. He held honorary degrees of ’D. Litt, at Oxford and Durham and of LL.D at Aberdeen and Edinburgh. , It is understood that an announcement will be made shortly that Mr. G. H. Mackley has been appointed General Manager of Railways in succession to the late Mr. P. G. Roussell. Mr. Mackley is at present Acting-General Manager, having previously been Assistant General Manager. The vacancy is likely to be filled by the promotion of Mr. E. Casey, at present chief mechanical engineer. The Minister of Railways, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, stated on Saturday night that he had had no recommendation from the Railways Board in regard to the appointment of a general manager.
