DAMAGE TO ROAD ROLLER
FILLING FAILS TO CARRY WEIGHT.
CONSTRUCTION OF DOVER ROAD.
The earthwork on Upper Dover Road is now almost finished, and. in fine weather the road can be negotiated by cars without difficulty. The the plant from Saunders Road proved rather awkward, both the traction engine and the roller having a narrow escape when the side of a large filling near the Katikara stream failed to carry the weight. The engine was brought back on the road in a day or two, but the roller proved more difficult to handle, several days elapsing and. minor damage being done to the machine before it was shifted to safety. The crushing plant has been set up at the new site, but it will be some time before everything is in working order. At the end of the tramline, which is now completed, stone is being blasted and stacked. The metal appears to be of excellent quality and should make a good wearing road. The, area being opened up by the Public Works Department reading, scheme, is to be given educational facilities at an early date, the Education Department having consented to the erection' of a school of the movable type on Carrington Road about half-way between Dover and Oxford Roads. During the last fortnight pastures have browned considerably, and the milk supply has steadily fallen. Supplementary feeding is being carried-out on a number of farms, though the practice of sowing soft turnips or maize for autumn is not so popular as in previous years. Several farmers in the district have had their hay baled this year in lieu of stacked. It is the first time this method has been adopted locally. It is contended that the time saved in feeding out and the elimination of loss in windy weather will more than com- , pensate for the extra cost involved.
