DAIRYING CO-ORDINATION.
Co-ordination of effort in the dairying industry was advanced a stage further at Palmerston North this week, when a representative gathering discussed several matters of importance to dairy farmers. Such co-operation is one of the first requirements to raise the quality of New Zealand butter and cheese to a plane where it will be able to hold its own in the steadily intensifying competition it is being called upon to meet. The danger of a shortage of rennet for cheese-making owing to the export of veils was recently denied in an authoritative quarter, but that the position is not as satisfactory as it might be is indicated by the fact that this conference of responsible representatives of the industry saw fit to unanimously pass a resolution aiming to secure an adequate supply of veils for the manufacture of rennet in New Zealand. It suggested that the export of veils should be prphibited for the coming season, that exports in future years should be subject to special license, and that any veils permitted to leave the country should be only the surplus above the quantity required to ensure an ample reserve in New Zealand. Another important request was that the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research should set up a standards department to ensure the supply to dairy factories of requisites of uniform good quality. British importers have frequently stressed the need for the utmost care and uniformity in the packing of produce, and it is to the benefit of the producers to do all possible to promote the goodwill of the consumers by meeting their requirements.
