TAKAPUNA RACES TO-DAY

SPEEDMINT’S CUP PROSPECT: GAY MARIGOLD WILL BE FANCIED REREATU’S CALLIOPE PROSPECT. ; (By “Hurry On.”) The Takapuna Jockey Club s summer' meeting will open to-day on the course at the Shore, when good fields will test all events. The principal races will, be the Takapuna Cup and the Zealandia Handicap. The programme opens with the TRIAL STAKES HANDICAP. ’ Of £lOO. Six furlongs.

Several of the runners have shown promise. Roman Mascot, Top Light, Golden Spahi, Schizanthus, Landlubber and Courthaven can all go fast. The most favoured will probably be Schizanthus, Landlubber and Top Light. OREWA ’HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP. Of £l2O. One mile and one furlong.

Motere, Royal Survey, Grand Spirit and Ruling King have shown no form of late. Neil went a fair race at Thames and Ornamental won at Bay of Islands, Principal and Wee Prince have been working well. The field is weak and very even, but backers will probably go for Ornamental, Principal and V)ee Prince. CARNIVAL HACK HANDICAP.

Lucidus won. really well at Te Awamutu and his ability to begin quickly will prove a big asset. Moonfleet is good but appears -unreliable. United may need a race, but Holly Lu is fit enough and galloping well. Mungatoon, Miss Lorraine, Currajong and Marmorate have all 'been showing form. Lucidus, Holly Lu and Moonfleet are the likely favourites. - TAKAPUNA CUP. z Of £3OO. One mile three furlongs and 40 yards.

The two top weights, Merry Damon and Sunny Sky, hail, from the same stable and may not both start. They both raced prominently at Ellerslie and their trainer, A. D. Adams, certainly holds a strong hand. Speedmint is a fit mare who rarely if ever runs a bad race. She won well at Thames and will carry solid support- here. Trisnna was with the leaders in the A.R.C. Handicap until a furlong from home, and on this form should show up. Great Emblem -won on the course in November,; and has been doing well at Takanini. The. three light-weights, Jaeldy Karo, Tarporley and Gay Idea, all stay on well enough to have chances. Speedmint looks like being a decided first choice ’with good money for Adams’ elect, Sunny Sky .Qg. Merry Damon,. and. Great Emblem. , CALLIOPE HANDICAP. : Of £l5O. Five furlongs. Rereatu S if Solomon 7 7 Gay Sheila S 6 Lorolli • 7 5 King ! Mostor . 8 5 • Lagoon 7 0 Deputy Ruler 7 8 Rereatu has done exceptionally well since racing at. the Taranaki meetings and is sure, to see a short price here; Gay Sheila’ usually races well, while King Mestor won. a double at .Thames. Deputy Ruler, Solomon. and Lorelli all have pace, but backers will probably pin their faith to Rereatu and King Mestor. ZEALANDIA HANDICAP.

Paganelli raced well during the holidays and has been displaying all his old pace in his track essays at Te Rapa. Lady Quex has been scratched. If reserved for this Sunny Sky should be prominent. Rosshird will need the race, but Whakapara and Chief Cook are a fit pair. The light-weights would appear to be held safely by Gay Marigold, whose second to La Moderne at even weights in the Queen’swPlate at Ellerslie represents good form; She will probably claim more support than Chief Cook and Paganelli. HAURAKI HACK HANDICAP. Of £l2O. One mile and one furlong.

Master Brierly is a really good hack who will see the distance right out. Valpai- is well but may be reserved for the last race. Glenrata, Hawthorn, Pelting and Merry Lap are all promising sorts. Indications point to Master Brierly starting favourite, though Pelting and Hawthorn will not be neglected. FERRY HANDICAP. Of £lOO. Seven furlongs.

Delrain is a solid customer but has his full share of weight. Valpai, Limex and Sunny Bachelor are a well-perform-ed trio, but most people will fancy the Trentham winner Broken Rule. She is likely to count more supporters than Valpai and Limex. TAKAPUNA WITHDRAWALS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. Scratchings for the Takapuna races are: Trial Stakes, Substation; Wynyard Plate,. Lapstone; all engagements, Black Marlin, Radiant Sun; Zealandia Handi-. cap, Moonfleet. Cup: Maori Boy at 4.15 p.m. TAIRANAKi J.C. MEETING
