APPRECIATION OF SERVICES

MR. SKOGLUND’S AID FOR BAND. UNION MAKES PRESENTATION. I The work done by Mr. P. Skoglund, Stratford, as one of the chief instigators of lie movement which resulted in the formation of the Taranaki Brass and Pipe Bands’ Union and later as one of those responsible for placing the union firmly on its feet and for developing keen interest in music through the medium of provincial band contests was recognised last night at a meeting of delegates to the union, when the patron, Mr. Percy Thomson, Mayor of Stratford, presented a smokers’ companion from the bands to Mr. Skoglund. Mr. Thomson said that during his term as Mayor he had had many duties given him, but the one allotted that night was a pleasant one to him both as Mayor and as patron of the union. He doubted if there was a more useful body in Taranaki than the union, which, was in the fifth year of its life. Some societies suffered with anaemia, while others were full-blooded; the union could be placed in the latter category. Much work in a body like the union devolved on the officers, chief among whom were the president and the secretary. One of those who took a leading part in the establishment of the union was Mr. Skoglund and the union in electing him as president made a wise choice that had been repeated in the successive years. Mr. Skoglund had taken a keen interest not only in. the various Stratford bands but also in bands throughout Taranaki. The bands affiliated to the union had felt for some time that they would like to pay tribute in a tangible way to Mr. Skoglund’s work in band matters. It was with extreme pleasure that he handed the gift to Mr. Skoglund. Mr. Skoglund said he appreciated the kindly thought that prompted the gift The contests in Taranaki had had the effect of creating more interest in music and he hoped the contest at Eltham would attract Taranaki bands. Mr. Skoglund gave credit to the secretary (Mr. H. Burmester) and to the bands for the way they had worked to make the contests successful.
