HAWERA MOTOR-CYCLISTS
MOVE TO RESUSCITATE OLD CLUB.
Several years ago the Hawera MotorCycle Club was a strong and active body but latterly it has been in recess. An attempt is now being made to revive interest. ~ Mr. W. A. Spragg, Hawera, president of the New Zealand Union, pointed out to a Daily News reporter yesterday the interest taken in motor-cycling in other parts of the province. He instanced the success of hill-climbing and reliability trials in Taranaki. Motor-cyclists round Hawera, continued Mr. Spragg, had noticed what other clubs were doing and he had had enquiries from a number. The prominence of the Hawera club previously was recalled and these men wished it to be revived. Steps were accordingly being taken to permit a resumption of activities, though what form these would take would not be known until the views of members were learned. inter-factory cricket. Hundreds of people arrived at Kaupokonui on Wednesday night to take part in an open air euchre party and dance in continuation of the beach gala. The novelty. appealed greatly to the younger people and it was a weird sight to see the animated throng in the dim light of motor-car headlights and the glow of a monster log fire. The* night was perfect and although the “floor” could not be regarded as ideal this did not deter the crowd from enjoying itself. With a piano mounted on Mr. A. Baldwin’s lorry Mr. C. W. Abbott played the music and an extra was played by Mrs. Milverton. Mr. Palmer and partner won a Monte Carlo and Mr. A. F. Ross was the winner of a lucky fox trot. Messrs. C. A. Burke and L. Hughes were masters of ceremonies. In the euchre Miss Minhinnick, Mrs. McCullum, Mrs. E. Long, Mrs.. Symmans and Mrs. Instone tied and in the play-off the prizes went to the first three. • The afternoon gala and the evening function netted about £2O towards the beach improvement funds. The beach residents have been greatly entertained by the antics of a performing dog, Toy, owned by Mr. Turner, Waiters. The animal shows great sagacity and has been trained by his master to do all manner of tricks. Every morning the early risers at the camp are to be seen taking their cold plunge in the river before 5 a.m. It is surprising how popular this has become. Several camping parties have departed and this week many more will be leaving in readiness for the beginning of school. A few. new-comers arrived last week-end, including Mr. and Mrs. Norman Shaw (Kaponga), Mr. and Mrs. L. G. Mudford (Otakeho), Mr. and Mrs. A. Kemp (Kaponga), Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Ross (Kaupokonui), Mrs. W. J. McDonald, Misses C. Duncan and B. Young. PERSONAL ITEMS. . Mr. A. H. Vile, R&ngitikei, is visiting Hawera. Mr. Rod Syme has returned to Hawera after a motor tour. HAWERA OPERA HOUSE. “PAYMENT DEFERRED” ENDING. I The main attraction at the Hawera Opera House to-night will be “Payment Deferred,” starring the English stage star Charles Laughton. Although a newcomer to the screen, he gives a performance that must be ranked amongst the finest. On the same programme the latest Laurel and Hardy comedy entitled “Scram” will be presented.
“Bring ’Em Back Alive,” visualising the adventures of Frank Buck in fetching the largest and most ferocious beasts from the jungle to the zoos of the world, will be, shown at the matinee to-morrow and will continue for a season of three nights. The picture shows among other events a stalking, preying, frothing female tiger cut a tiny baby, elephant off from its mother.
