HAWERA NOT COMPETING

TARANAKI BANDS CONTEST. REASONS FOR DECISION GIVEN. A full meeting of the Hawera Band has' decided to support the committee’s decision not to compete in the Taranaki contest at Eltham. The band is building up a combination for the next Dominion contest, which will be held in the North Island. After Mr. E. Dixon, who presided, outlined the position and it was fully discussed it was decided that the committee’s decision not to compete at Eltham should be supported for the reasons that during the year the band lost no fewer than 21 members; two of the soloists had asked for two or three weeks’ leave of absence for personal reasons; the bass section, with one exception, was composed wholly of learners; the band would be without the services of a bass trombone player for six months; the senior band was composed of boys, with only a few exceptions, and many were still, going to school. STRIKING PLATFORM SPEAKER-

AN EXAMPLE OF DRESS REFORM.

Rational dress is very much in the public eye at present. Dr. G. Smith, Rawene, Hokianga, who spoke at Hawera on Tuesday night, provides an example of dress reform. His mode of dress assisted in making him the most arresting platform personality seen in Hawera for months. Describing himself as a “stray” doctor man, the lecturer took the dais rather unconventially clad. Hie wore an opennecked tennis shirt and no waistcoat, but the most striking part of his outfit was a pair of Turkish sandals without socks. ' His ’ bearing, too, was unusual. He walked slowly up and down the platform, varying it with sitting on the table. However, the doctor had the personality to carry these eccentricities off. A tall man, over six feet in height and well proportioned, Dr. Smith spoke softly yet very distinctly.

The party, together with friends from Hurley ville, Manutahi, Waverley and Patea, made the excursion in-cars, 200 people attending. Taylor, expressed the party’s pleasure with the facilities at the pavilion and playground, full use of which had been granted by the Patea Seaside Improvement Society. Supporting Mrs. Taylor in the organising work were Mrs. R. E. Nicholson, Alton, and an energetic committee. Mrs. MacFarlane, the Waverley president, also attended. The excursion, which functioned smoothly, terminated in the late afternoon. At a meeting of the Patea Women’s Institute it was decided tp hold the annual picnic at the Patea beach. The picnic will be on the old-fashioned lines, all baskets being pooled. There will be races, games and treasure hunts for the children. POLICE STAFF INCREASED. PATEA WORKS DIFFICULTY.
