A SIGHT WORTH SEEING.
(To the Editor.)
Sir,—For the benefit of tourists and those of you who appreciate the beauties of nature, I would like to draw attention to one of the most arresting sights in the whole of Taranaki. Owing, let us suppose, to an oversight on the part of the Department of Agriculture, it is not even mentioned in the guidebooks. We are all familiar with the golden-fleece and the golden butter-pat, but there are in Wellington, at least, men who are not familiar with our golden pastures. I would direct those in search of the beauties of Taranaki to an area situated on the Okoke Road, not far from the Main North Road. There they would see our flourishing ragwort plant, a mass of gold spread over many acres. Certain people sometimes come to view the sight towards the end of February, but such belated visitors miss it at its best, as the golden glory of the flower has blown away by then. I have been led to believe that even that battling organisation known as the Farmers’ Union is not alive to the possibilities of this wonderful sight. How thankful we should be that sodium chlorate is almost unprocurable or some callous farmers might be tempted to check the works of nature. I am, etc., ' H. GRYLLS, Okoke Road, January 15, 1933.
