TRENTHAM OPENS TO-DAY

FINE FIELD IN THE CUP PROSPECTS OF GOLD TRAIL. AUTOPAY AND ORAPAI IN SPRINT. (By “Hurry On.”) The Wellington Racing Club’s summer gathering, which opens at Trentham today, is providing a meeting ground for the pick of the horses from both islands, and wonderful fields will contest all events, more especially the Cup and Telegraph. The straight-out and place system of totalisator investment will be in operation, and with the large fields should be a great success. / Proceedings commence with the TRENTHAM HIGHWEIGHT. ' Of £l5O. One mile.

Though Jayson has not shown up lately he usually races well at Trentham and should hold Juggle, and Saltpot. Beau Gallant, who has won his last two races, is just the sort to succeed here, as he f has plenty of size and can handle weight Nightguard won two events of this type down south during the holidays. Monastic and Blacksmith both have credentials, while among those lower down Flower and Chief Line may do best. Form, points very strongly to Beau Gallant being favoured, with Nightguard and Jayson also well backed.

Doreen 7 5 This is going to provide a fine trial between some smart three-year-olds and the choice of the season’s two-year-olds. > Inflation will be making his first appearance for some time and may not be quite at his best. Good Hunting, although only a hack, can run a fast five furlongs. Lack has disappointed so far, but Midinette is improving. Importance looks out of her class. The choice of the .youngsters appear to be Diatomous and Princess Doreen, and they can see out a merry five furlongs. Counterplay and Fracas are a pair of improvers, but the distance may be too short for Guarantee and Golden Hair. Speculation is likely to take a wide range, but the fancied division should include Diatomous, Princess Doreen and Midinette. APPRENTICES’ PLATE (Hack). Of £l6O. Seven furlongs.

The public will have a real problem here, and it is safe to say that with the apprentice riders aboard, most of the speculation will be done on the place ; machine. Among the older ' division Aiguille, Azalea, Beaconsfield and Eminent have all really good form in their favour, but with 101 b. advantage the three-year-olds will take a lot of beating. Argentic, Broken Rule, Farmer Chock Say,. Glenvane, Glowlight and Worship have all been winning of late, - some in open l company. The event is very open, but the most favoured may be Farmer, Glenvane, Argentic and Aiguille. ' \ FITZHERBERT HANDICAP. ' Of £l6O. Five furlongs.

If reserved for this Golden Hair would take a lot of beating, for the chestnut filly is improving all the time. Counterplay is to start in the Stakes. Porotiti won at, Awapuni • and should have im- . proved sirice then. Pegged Exchange can gallop when in the mood, whileLady Nan accounted for Wait and See .at the Wairarapa meeting. Bon Rapide, Gay Crest, Catalogue, Epigram and Dover Patrol are possibilities, but three who should be prominent at the finish are Golden Hair, Porotiti and Lady Nan. WELLINGTON CUP. Of £6OO. One mile and' a-half.

This is the big event of the day. Antique’s fine showings at Ellerslie have earned him number one saddle cloth, and he'is sure to carry it with distinction, as he is' a master of weight. Concentrate is still doing well and was not over-lucky during the holidays. Great Star won the Grandstand Handicap the final day at Ellerslie in. good style, beating a good horse in Sunny Sky, and has gone the right way since. Gold Trail galloped a great mile at Hastings on Saturday and will be in fine order for her task. She is a great filly. Old Seatown ran a fair race at Stratford and should have improved in the interval. His trainer, J. Butler, knows his business and is not in the habit of chasing forlorn chances, so it may be taken for granted that his charge is ready for the fray. Jaloux beat all but Compris last year and is sure to be going well at the finish to-day. Red Heckle is going well at Riccarton, but may need a race. Merry Peel may find the distar. - too far, but Red Sun and Royal Artist will see it right out. My Own has done little to justify her presence here, but Tout le Mond, Retract and Refresher all raced well during the holidays. Of those on the iriinimum Princess Argosy and Greenhorn make most appeal. This will certainly be a great contest and the strength of -the lightly-weighted division is going to make the lot of the top-weights a hard one. For this reason the chances of Gold Trail, Great Star and Jaloux will be fancied. ANNIVERSARY HANDICAP.

The top-weight, Arrow Lad, has displayed no real form since Feilding. Shatter may be in need of a race. Awaken is just coming to her best again. Ranelagh won during the holidays at Oamaru in good style. Richfield may not begin well enough in the big field, but Ruling Light if in a generous mood is good over this distance. Of those lower down Gay Court, La Poupee, Nightmare and Tippling, especially the last-named, have all winning chances. In an even betting race the public

may incline to Ranelagh, Awaken and Tippling. TELEGRAPH HANDICAP. Of £3OO. Six furlongs.

There are plenty of speedy sprinters engaged here. Autopay demonstrated at Awapuni that he is as good as ever, and unless Golden Wings improves on his Ellerslie form Autopay hould beat him at even weights. Cricket Bat has not raced over this distance for some time but he begins well enough. Souchong may be in the lead most of the way, but the long straight may find him out. Orapai is at the top of his form and the rains that have fallen will be in his favour. La Moderne did well during the holidays but is rather close to Orapai and may find difficulty in giving five pounds to The Quorn, who is galloping well. Lordly Knight won easily the final day at Ellerslie, while last October The Tiger gave The Quorn weight and an easy beating on this course. Hurlingham and Miladi have light-weight's chances, but indications point to Autopay, Orapai and The Tiger receiving most support. RUAPEHU HANDICAP. Of £l6O. Six Furlongs. a x *

This field is perhaps not as strong as usual. Hula Belle and Navaho won during the holidays but are no champions and would appear to be safely held by Gold Gleam, who is more than ordinarily smart. Headmaster is improving, while Idolise has shown herself to -be a speedy sort. Lower- down Illuminate, Grand Review, Nebulae, Chief Light and Kamal Pasha all can gallop. Possibly the favourites will include Gold Gleam, Idolise and Headmaster. ' FINAL GALLOPS AT TRENTHAM. PREPARATIONS FOR TO-DAY. Wellington, Jan. 18. The final galloping ■at Trentham this morning, though interesting, was not enlightening, no sensational trial being recorded and most of the work being over short courses only. The weather was threatening early, and very heavy rain fell for a quarter of an hour during the galloping, but later it cleared and now the sky is blue, with prospects of a fine day to-morrow. The trial grass was used for fast work.

Autopay, accompanied by Taura Lad, came home from the three furlongs post in 41sec. easily. Red Sun, picked up by Sage at the six furlong post ran a mile in Imin. 46 l-ssec., the last six furlongs in 1.20 2-5 and the last half-mile in 53 4-5, doing his work well all the way.

During the rain Glenvane and Glowlight ran half a mile in 51 1-5, and Concentrate and Martian Chief finished their two rounds of pacing. After the downpour had ceased there was a plethora of short galloping, mostly over half-miles and three furlongs. Jaloux, who looks in great order, sprinted the last three furlongs of his work in 41. Azalea did a similar task in 38 1-5. Aga Khan sprinted down the straight. Posy ran half a mile in 50 2-5, and Broken Rule recorded the same time. Slippery beat Chile by three lengths over half a mile run in 50 3-5. Lyrical did half a mile in 51. Lordly Knight ran the best half-mile, doing it in 50. ’ Miladi sprinted' smartly ' down the straight. Royal Artist and Antique went half a mile together- in 50 4-5. Rational 11.. finished just in front of Nightguard over the same distance in sfi-5. •' • ■ T’: ' Juniper, found. Eupator of little, use over half a mile in 51. Refresher had a length break on Gold. Trail, with Lady Pam a couple of lengths behind through most of their mile, but Gold Trail was on terms with Refresher at the end in 1.46 4-5, the last half in 54.

Orapai finished a couple of lengths clear of Tahoma at the end of an easy six furlongs in 1.20, the final hilf-mile taking 54. . Late Jest ran half a mile in 51 1-5. Tout le Mond and Gay Crest, who have had a lot of work put into them since their arrival, again went seven furlongs, finishing together in 1.34, the last half-mile being run in 54 2-5. On the course proper several two-year-olds sprinted down from the half-mile barrier. Golden Hair was going better than Porotiti at the end of their trial. Others to gallop down separately were Diatomous, Bon Rapide, Princess Doreen and Catalogue. Most of the visiting horses are now on the scene. The majority ,of the southerners arrived yesterday, and those not galloped did pacing. The remainder come on this morning’s ferry. Wairarapa, Woodville and Awapuni horses are expected to-day.
