OKATO DISTRICT NEWS

FARMING AND RIFLE SHOOTING.

The rains which fell on Saturday and Sunday on the higher levels will prove beneficial to swede crops in the district Pastures, too, will welcome the downpour, and it is/Unfortunate the rain did not fall on the beach lands, which ,at present are very parched. Though the majority of farmers have completed harvesting operations, several areas of oats for ensilage are still standing. An unfortunate feature of the oat crops this year was the lack of uniformity in ripening. Though the sacks were branded similarly, in a considerable number of instances parts of the fields were about two weeks ahead of the remainder. Had the crops been sown for seed or chaff this would have proved most awkward. ' . : ... There are three miles of metal to put down on Dover Road, and this will give access to a number of really good sections, which., of late years have deteriorated. The rifle club shooting competition reached the semi-final stage on Saturday. Visibility was excellent, but a strong fish-tail had its effects. The final is very open, several of the competitors being within striking distance. The scores
