DOMINION TEAMS BOWLING

third and fourth rounds

TARANAKI TEAMS IMPROVING.

AUCKLANDERS WIN “TEST MATCH.”

By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Jan. 14.

The 400 New Zealand bowlers taking part in the Dominion tournament at Wellington have enjoyed a week of perfect summer weather and games have been played under ideal conditions. The third and fourth rounds of the teams championship were played to-day.

The thrill of the day was the great contest between the Australian team skipped by Cumming (Sydney) and an Auckland team skipped by Maxwell Walker, last year’s champions. The victory went to Walker. In the game between Jones (Woburn) and Noble Adams (Blenheim) at Kelburn yesterday Nicholas (lead for Adams) trailed the jack to 10 inches from the ditch. Jones asked Cook (his No. 2) to put the jack in the ditch. Cook missed the jack, by a fraction and sent a toucher over the edge, where it was still “alive.” Jones asked Cook -to . try again. This time Cook carried the jack in the ditch to be 1J inches from it. With a Blenheim toucher bowl two inches away it was impossible for either side to alter the position and the head was declared, the remaining eight bowls not being sent down.

Fielding’s team from Hataitai had a sultry time against Skoglund’s team from Stratford, Skoglund’s team commenced driving with deadly effect and took shot after shot from their opponents. Fielding endeavoured to reply but was not successful. He resumed drawing and picked up some arrears but not enough to win.

Mark’s team (Christchurch) played beautiful bowls and O’Donnell’s Wellington team never had a look in. Time after time Day and Bamsdale buried kitty. O’Donnell and Parkhouse did some driving but made no headway; their opponents were just Unplayable. The result was 31—15 in favour of Marks. J. Nash (Palmerston North) was in great form drawing and driving against Brighting (Hataitai). Brighting, trailing behind all the time, was beaten by six. Trayes (Mount Eden) scored on each of the first six heads against Markman (Thomdon). The latter soon got going after that and drew level at half-way. He scored six on the 18th head, five on the 23rd and won by 13. AUSTRALIA V. DOMINION. Maxwell Walker’s game against the Australians was a ding-dong battle all the way—something like a test match. Cumming (Sydney) was in great form, as was Marshall (Mosman). His No. 3 (Beisley, East Fremantle), was off-colour the previous day and played No. 2. The Auckland men were all playing well. On the last head Cumming wanted five to tie and had three shots in. Walker pushed another in for four. Cumming tried to draw the fifth to tie but unluckily trailed kitty to the back and lost by four.

Higginbotham>(Mt. Albert) wanted four to tie on the last head with Ives (Canterbury)- He had a chance by trailing the jack to the left side of the ditch with the last bowl but the jack unluckily went the other way to his detriment. Smart (New Plymouth), who had two losses on Friday, secured his first win against Lowrie’s team (which won the centre tournament). Lambert (Thorndon) had his first defeat by Benefield (Wanganui). Reid (Lyall Bay) was heavily beaten by J. Kerr (Onehunga). Turpin’s team from Christchurch, the youngest in the tournament (Elsom 35, Hearn 33, Taylor 30. and Turpin 30, the last two being the youngest bowlers in the tournament) had a great win over McComish (Maitai). Hutchison (Dunedin) struck a bad patch against Hughan (Carterton) in a game that was a struggle all the way for singles. Hughan won by fhrpe. Bremner had another unexpected defeat in the morning, going down 26—22 to Gordon (Wanganui). The struggle of the afternoon was the gaynA between Maxwell Walter (Auckland) and Hutchins (Wanganui). Walker gained three on the first and one on the fifth, and these were his only scores until the 15th head, when Hutchins led 20—4. It looked as if Auckland had packed up but they made a remarkable recovery. From the 15th to 18th heads (inclusive) Walter added 9 points. He added another four-on the 20th and two on the 24th, when he wanted four to tie and five to win. It was a terrific struggle but in the end Walker was one short of a tie.

Cumming (Sydney) and Bringans (Khandallah) scored 58 points in their game, 36 going to the Australian; his card included three fours and a five. The heaviest score for a teams game so far was that by Robertson (Onehunga) and Noble Adams (Blenheim), Robertson winning 44—22. He had a six, four fours and two threes'. Noble Adams scored two fives. Marks (Christchurch) went down to Tongue (Auckland) in the last round of the day, this being his only loss.
