HAWERA COUNTY COUNCIL

reduced land values favoured BUSINESS OF MONTHLY MEETING. The first meeting of the year of the Hawera County Council was .held on Saturday morning. Councillors present were,Messrs.. J. B. Murdoch' (chairman), W. Rothery, A. G. Larcom, A- E. Death, E. A. Washer, H. I. Crocker and J. Lander. v The question of land values and the possibility of an all-round reduction of 20 per cent, in valuations was raised in a letter from the Eltham County Council. The Valuer-General had advised the Eltham council that the reduction must be made, if at all, over the whole of the Hawera hospital district, for which reason the Eltham council suggested that a meeting of representatives of the various local bodies interested be held at Hawera to discuss the 'question of concerted action. It was resolved unanimously that the suggestion of reduced valuations be supported. Crs. Murdoch, Winks and Washer were appointed a committee to represent the council at, the proposed meeting at Hawera on Thursday. Correspondence was discussed in connection with the proposed Tongahoe deviation. The land survey had not been completed because the precise route of the approach to the new bridge had not been determined by the Public Works Department; as soon as that had been fixed the project would begin to go forward. , , , Unemployed labour is to be used, for the work. The alternative of utilising council labour was considered hardly revelant in view of the fact that the unemployed must be given work of some kind and this was a suitable job for relief men. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The engineer (Mr. A. Muggeridge) in his monthly report said dam on Whareroa Road had been drained; it was an inexpensive job as most of the work was done with unemployed labour. The greater portion of the distance was tunnelled by one of the council s staff. The one-foot pipes were the biggest item, costing £5. The comer on the factory side of the filling had been removed and several ratepayers had approached him to have the hill on the near side lowered; it was fairly steep at the present time and it would not be a big job to lower it while the work was in hand on the filling. • • ■ Good progress was being made with the widening of Ahiapiapa Road. The work in the pit was being done with unemployed labour, as was some of the countersinking on the road. The cutting on Tempsky Road was proceeding satisfactorily and traffic could go through the new cutting. .There was considerably more work to, be done in widening as the road could not be kept open if it was not kept to its full width. The surface dressing with bitumen of Ohangai Road was almost completed from Meremere Road to the junction of Tawhiti Road. There had been considerable trouble with soft bitumen in the past month. Bitumen that had been down for two and three years and. gave no trouble last year had had to be dressed with shingle twice and in some cases four times. . . . The men who were in Batten’s pit were back on the beach procuring stone required for patching and widening corners. The bridge carpenter was putting a flitch in one of the chords in the Tongahoe bridge as one of them had broken. . t n.i.r' The resident engineer of the Public Works Department had looked at the approach to the tunnel on Tongahoe Valley Road and had come to the conclusion that a concrete tunnel about 50 feet long .was the only solution of the difficulty. The horse track on the Hawera side of the Waingongoro River on Main South Road had been metalled from Batten’s pit. Eleven chains of a bad portion of the road leading to the rifle butts had been metalled. winchester shooting trophies. MacDONALD AND ROOTS DO. BEST. Ideal conditions prevailed at Patea on Saturday when a small muster of members of the Pat- Defence Rifle Club competed at the 20tf and 300 yards

PERSONALS. The Rev. F. A. Crawshaw, Palmerston North, New Zealand secretary of the Mission to Lepers, is on a holiday visit to Hawera with his wife and family and' is the guest of Mrs. M. Dowling, Argyle Street. A large number of old friends attended the funeral of Mrs. C. F. MacGregor at Hawera on Friday. Many beautiful ■ wreaths bore witness to the high estimation in which Mrs. MacGregor was held in the community. The Rev. W. Morrison Sutherland officiated at the graveside and the bearers were Messrs. W. Robertson, J. Deacon, A. Coleman, J. Robertson, W. Syme and A. Hunter. “HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS.” GEORGE WALLACE FILM SUCCESS. George Wallace is so well known in New Zealand that patrons of the Hawera Opera House on Saturday knew what to expect in “His Royal Highness,” which will be shown again to-night, to-mor-row and to-morrow night. The whole film isj good but without George Wallace it would be ordinary. His typically Australian humour is something that audiences can appreciate and he had Saturday night’s in a perpetual state of merriment. It is enough to say that George Wallace is just Ss funny on the film as he is on the stage. The settings and some good chorus work add to the picture. The supporting Australian short features are excellent, including some that have been on other Efftee programmes. They are given by the cream of Australian vaudeville artists . plus another of those fascinating Great Barrier Reef films. The photography and recording are well up to standard. The programme is probably the best yet made by Efftee and is quite the, best of I all the films seen in Hawera recently.]
