PROFESSIONAL ATHLETICS

NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB NOTES.

The first athletic events of the 1933 series of the New Plymouth League Club will be conducted next Wednesday. The series , was to have commenced last Wednesday but the visit of the Southern Cross caused the sports to be abandoned for the week.

The programme set down for next Wedriesday includes 100 yards, 300 yards and 600 yards runs, while the A grade cycling events are half and two-mile, for B. grade cycling the half-mile. The number of professional runners is increasing and there' are several more who will probably compete in the near future.

Amongst the runners W; Aubrey has been very. consistent and improves each week. He is the best New. Plymouth runner. ' N. Gordon has proved a fair middledistance runner and gained the medal for runner-up points prize. Lou Hoffmann turned out at the last evening sports and showed that he still has a fair amount of pace. Although on big marks he won two events- easily. Amongst the cyclists Don Beer has proved the best sprint cyclist and Alec Ellis the best distance man. Still both riders can improve a lot, especially as to the , riding of their races, and a little more head, work will help both greatly. Doug George: is still the best of the B grade and shows a fair amount of pace. The first “club run” of the season will be held this week-end, leaving, the town at 10 a.m. Members, cyclists and friends are invited to attend. The “run” is to the Bell Block beach. Tea will'be provided, and included in-the day’s fun will b'e a cricket match. A team will be selected to challenge the Waitara, Sports Club for a friendly cricket match in the near future. A steady cycling pace will be maintained to and from the beach, and the pace will be . made to suit all present.
