Chechanco was soon in front, attended by Monty Chimes, Ozanum and Gold Era. There was little change throughout, Chechanco scoring easily. Peter Mitchell finished very fast. First Money quickly established a lead with Gold Paper, Enwood and Ruling Light. Ruling Light was third into the straight and mowed down the leaders to win well. First Money stopped badly in the straight. Assemble and Silver Paper were badly away, Assemble being rather unlucky.

Smuggler led at the distance. Then Red Sea came with a great run to beat him by three-quarters of a length. Toreador was two and a-half lengths away. Then came Tippling and Princess Argosy.
