TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS
PROMINENT PLAYERS ENTER MALFROY TO BE A COMPETITOR. DRAW. FOR PROVINCIAL TOURNEY. Good entries have been received for the Taranaki lawn tennis championship and handicap tournament to be commenced at New Plymouth to-day. They include such prominent players in the Dominion tennis world as A. Stedman (Auckland), C. E. Malfroy (Wellington), N. R. C. Wilson (Wellington) and J. C. Charters (Pukekohe). Since leaving Wellington for Cambridge University two years and a half ago, Malfroy has frequently been in the limelight of big tennis. He was awarded his blue at Cambridge, ajid acted as captain of the tennis team for two years. In ms first season at Wimbledon he defeated the Italian Davis Cup player Gaslinl before losing to Cochet, and had wins at various tournaments over a number of prominent players. He did particularly well at Wimbledon last year, eventually going under to the ultimate winner, S. B. Wood America, in a long and thrilling five-set match. Last week Malfroy won the Wellington Association singles championship by defeating E. D. Andrews, another New Zealand player who has been prominent abroad. Stedman is an ex-New Zealand champion and Wilson an ex-North Island champion. Both have won Taranaki championships. Charters is also well known to Taranaki and has been single? champion. With Stedman he has alst won the doubles championship. Other prominent competitors will be J. McCarthy, a leading player at Wellington and a winner at the Hawera tournament last week, and C. H.
