WAITARA WORKS POSITION
MR. S. G. SMITH MEETS THE MEN. WILL URGE A CONFERENCE. At the invitation of the Waitara Freezing Workers’ Union Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P., addressed an orderly meeting of the men at Waitara on Saturday. The meeting was not open to the Press, but it was afterwards reported that, having heard a presentation of the men’s case, Mr. Smith said he would urge the authorities to arrange a further conference between the union representatives and the employers. Mr. Smith pointed out that with the low prices for meat ruling on the Home markets it was not possible . for the employers to pay the, former rates of wages. He suggested that with the country in its present state everyone should pull together. This was not the time for strikes. He said it was not fair to place a stigma on the so-called free labourers, some of whom had a wife and family to support and, with that object in view, had accepted the work offering at the Waitara works. Mr. Smith answered a number of questions and was accorded a vote of thanks.
