THE WINNERS WELL BACKED SILVER SCORN AGAIN IN FORM. UNUSUAL EVENTS IN HURDLES. (By Wire —Special to News.) Auckland, Last Night. Silver Scorn and Tea Trader were the only favourites to win at Ellerslie today, but most of the winners were well supported and the only one to pay a really good price was Lady Spy, who returned double figures in the first race. The distinction of paying the best dividend of the meeting fell to Prince Colossus, who was the outsider of a field of eighteen in the County Handicap and returned over a third of a century for second. Sunny Bachelor and Azalea were favourites for the Ellerslie Handicap, but Azalea lost her chance at the start, as she was left some lengths and her rider lost his irons. She overtook some of the field in the first half-mile but was never close enough to look like winning. Prolyxo attempted to win all the way, but Lady Spy assumed command at the foot of the straight and cleared right away. Grand Review came home fairly well to get second just ahead of Transaction, who also finished on. Grand Spirit was running on. Prolyxo and Thespis did best of the others. Sunny Bachelor was eighth. WEATHERWISE FINISHES WELL. Determination and a fine run on the rails enabled Weatherwise to just win the Midsummer Handicap from Gay Sheila, who was returning double figures to win, and the favourite Midian. Gay Sheila and Tavern Knight set a

fast pace and were followed into the straight by Weatherwise, Pelagia and Midian. Tavern Knight was beaten after rounding the bend, but Gay Sheila hung on well, only to ■ leave the fence in the last furlong and allow Weatherwise to get up and beat h»r in the last few strides. Midian, without having the best of the running, made a fine effort to get third, and Epigram finished strongly in fourth position. Epigram was off early and went wide round the turn, so that his effort was very encouraging. Pegged Exchange showed up to the turn, while Bon Rapide was running on at the finish after striking some trouble early. BACKERS’ MISFORTUNES. There was a very unusual happening before the start of the New Year s Hurdles. Prince of Orange, the favourite, had an attack of colic at the post and was withdrawn after being examined by a veterinary surgeon, his owner and trainer and several members of the committee. He was not taken out until after the totalisator was closed, hence the £2491 invested on his chance could not be refunded. Then to add to the misfortunes of the backers Captain s Gift, second fancy, had to be pulled up with a badly injured stifle when going well in the lead with Sub-Editor and High Pitch five furlongs from home. Ar-, cade led into the straight clear, but finished weakly after hitting the last fence hard, and was beaten home by both High Pitch and Patutahi, who came from a long way back. RED SUN SURPRISES. Great Star and Concentrate were popular fancies in a substantial pool on the Auckland Racing Club Handicap. Great Star went 'to the front and attempted to slow down the field, which he did for the first half-mile, when most of those behind were pulling hard. Trishna then rushed to the front at the seven furlongs post and the speed immediately quickened, Trishna leading to the home turn, where Antique, Red Sun, Great Star and Royal Artist were his nearest attendants. Red Sun took command below the distance and stalled off a determined challenge from Speedmint, who came from second to last, at the half-mile and finished out. Antique was a good third and .Great Star was fourth, ahead of ' Concentrate and Trishna. Red Sun was last in the first few furlongs but he and Antique were assisted by being taken up handy before the pace was clapped on in earnest. Great Star might have succeeded if his rider had been allowed to slow the field down much longer, but the race was not run to suit Concentrate, who was staying on at the finish. Gay Crest and Great Emblem pulled hard early and both faded out in the last few furlongs. SILVER SCORN VERY EASILY.

Silver Scorn was an odds-on fancy for the Great Northern Derby, and justified her favouritism by winning with the greatest ease. Ellis'kept her fairly well back when Pillow Fight was. making the running from Jonathan, Supreme Ruler and La Modeme, but moved up handy on the outside after passing the five furlongs post, where Tout le Mond commenced a fast run from the rear. Tout le Mond and Silver Scorn joined Pillow Fight, in the lead at the turn and Silver Scorn then went away to win as she liked from’La Modeme. Gold Trail finished on to just beat Tout le Mond for third, and Pillow Fight was fifth. Silver Scorn showed. marked superiority over her opponents and gave nothing a chance in the straight; Gold Trail might have been a shade < loser if she had not received a couple on check's, and Tout le Mond would also have done better but for running his race in patches. Silver Ring again failed jaadly.

THE .COUNTY <0 MOONFLEET. toyHoHy Lu and Moonfleet Tor the County Handicap, but after having every chance the best she could do Was to finish fourth. Prince Colossus anji Moonfleet made the running into the from Broken Rule, Pelting and Blanford, and in a good finish Moonfleet just outstayed Prince Colossus, who was the outsider of the field and returned over a third of a century for second. Woodfull finished strongly to get third and Broken Rule was next ahead of Holly Lu, Pelting and Blanford.' The first six horses all ran good races, but the unlucky one was Pelting. He was second to last for two furlongs and then made a fine run on the outside to, be up handy to the leaders at the turn, The effort was too great and he weakened in the last halffurlong. TEA TRADER ALL THE WAY. Well ridden by L. G. Morris, Tea Trader led almost from the barrier rise in the Newmarket Handicap, for which he was a slightly-better fancy than Lady Quex. After allowing his mount to get properly balanced in the first furlong Morris let Tea Trader use his speed, and the three-year-old was three lengths clear at the turn from L’Allegro and Chromadyne, who remained his nearest attendants to the post. Tea> Trader displayed his usual tendency to hang rounding the bend,; but Morris always had him in hand and he won really well. The Quorn was first out but soon drifted to be back near the rear at the turn and then finish well into fourth position. Exaggeration failed to begin as well as usual and was never dangerous, while Arisus. spoilt his chance b£ bleeding. Lady Quex was a trifle sore and showed no dash at all. KING’S ARCHER NARROWLY. Cricket Bat, a pronounced favourite, made a fine bid for victory in the Glasgow Handicap. He got through between the pacemakers, King’s Archer and Karangapai, at,the distance but could not quite reach King’s Archer, who stayed on very solidly under the whip. Merry Damon came from the rear to get third, and Jaeldy Karo also ran on to head the tiring Karangapai for fourth. Cricket Bat drifted slightly in the middle stages after appearing to get squeezed, but otherwise had every chance. All Humbug displayed some dash when he ran up on the outside at the turn, but failed to go on in the straight. Lord Vai, who was sore, finished without dash, but Merry Damon again ran well.
