CHRISTMAS CHEER CONCERT
PUNGAREHU ENTERTAINMENT.
FINE PROGRAMME PRESENTED.
In order to ensure that the cheerfulness of Christmas should not be nuss?ng from the homes of many children along the coast whose parents are feeling the stress of hard tunes, a con / organised by Mr. H. Pickering was; held in the Pungarehu Hall last night. It attracted a representative audience from as far away as Oaonui, and with donations a fair sum should be available. The expenses were practically nil, everything being donated, including the supper, which was provided by the Rahotu branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. . . _ A splendid programme of varied items was given, the performers including a contingent from Opunake, and every item was enjoyed' by the audience, which showed its appreciation by unstinted applause. <( _ The programme was.—Song, me Floral Dance,” Mr. S. Verrail, who gave, as an encore “Little. Irish Girl”; comic song in character, “Wire In My Boys, Mr. Percy Sole, who responded to a vociferous encore with “I’m Shy Ellen”; song, “When Song Is Sweet, Miss Laura Sole, whose encore number, “When Your Hair • Has Turned toSilver,” was equally pleasing; song, T e House At the End of the Lane, Mr. C. Maindonald, whose recall number was “Smiling Through”; comic song m character, “Parish of Puddle, Mr. H. Pickering, which convulsed the house, as did his encore number, “An Inoffensive Man”; cornet solos, “The Village Festival,” Mr. C. Humphries, whose playing received a well-deserved recall, to which he .responded with Skylark , duet, “Omaha,” Mrs. Malcolm and Miss Johnson, whose voices blended so harmoniously that they had to respond,to a double encore with “Sweet Chiming Bells.’ ’ . The audience could not .have enough of the Maori hakas by a. band of. 14. Maori boys led by Charlie Kira and Tame Hana. A humorous sketch, The Ghost,” was given by Messrs H. Pickering, C. Maindonald and P. Sole. Other items were: Song, “The Trumpeter,” Mr. S. Verrail, and as an encore, “The Sea Rose”; comic song in characering, C. Maindonald and P. Sole, comet solo,' “Star of England,” Mr. Humphries, and as an encore, “Break of Day”; comic song in character, ’“I Married Mary,” Mr. H. Pickering, _ whose recall number was “I Got Married To a Widow.” ... The accompaniments were played by Miss E. Gilhooly, Mesdames C. Malcolm and A. Lowry. Subsequently two or three hours were devoted to dancing, music being provided by Miss Gilhooly and extras being played by Mrs. C. Malcolm, Miss L. Sole and Mr. A. Roots, the last-named being also M.C.
The Women’s Division has in hand the distribution of funds, which as far as possible will be utilised in assisting to provide Christmas dinners as well as shoes and material for clothes, which will be distributed to deserving families in the Rahotu and Pungarehu districts. Further contributions, are being sought.
