HOLIDAY TRAVELLERS

MANY FROM AUSTRALIA. FEWER FROM HOME. Wellington, December 17. When the Union Company’s liner Monowai left Wellington yesterday afternoon for Sydney she took 300 passengers, the last who will reach Australia from New Zealand before Christmas. Despite the slump a fair number of people are crossing .the Tasman during the holidays this year, principally to New Zealand. The Monowai, when she arrived at Wellington last Tuesday morning brought nearly 300 passengers. Next Tuesday about 900 are . due from: Australia. The Huddart, Parker steamer Zealandia, which is due at Wellington that morning from Sydney, will bring about 300, while the Union Company’s Marama and the Matson liner Monterey, both due at Auckland the same day, will bring about 600 between them. Passengers from England are fewer this year, though the Shaw, Savill liner lonic, which arrived at Wellington yes-

terday morning from London and Southampton, brought 178, and the New Zealand Shipping Company’s motor-liner Rangitata, due at Auckland next Wednesday from London, has on board between 100 and 150.

In the Lyttelton, Nelson and Picton ferry services the number travelling over the holidays is expected to be about the same, or slightly heavier than last year.
