LOSS TO BRITISH GOLF
.. COTTON GOES TO BELGIUM. (From Our Own Correspondent). London. Nov. 13. British golf is to lose another of its best players in Henry Cotton, who recently won the professional match-play championship. Cotton has accepted an appointment with the Waterloo Club, Belgium, and he will start on his new duties in the new year. His contract is for two years, and the salary is the biggest that has ever been offered to a British golfer. For seven years Cotton has been professional to the Langley Park Club, London, and during this time his game .has developed to such an extent that at the moment he ranks as the leading British player. Unfortunately he has not won the popularity that might have been expected, and, while it is true that the Belgium club’s offer was so good that he could not decline it, it is possible he was willing to go abroad for temperamental reasons. Cotton intends to continue to compete in the British tournaments and championships, and he contemplates buying an aeroplane to travel to and from the Continent. ' But he will not be. eligible to take part in the Ryder Cup match against the Americans, which is due to be played in this country next year. The professionals have themselves made it a rule that only players resident at home may be chosen for this, and so Cotton, as in the case of Aubrey Boomer, who lives in Paris, will be barred. Fortunately, Percy Alliss has returned from Berlin, and he will now be available for the match in the spring.
