Entries for the Hawerd Tennis Club’s tournament, the next event of interest in the Taranaki tennis world, are very good. A pleasing feature this year is the increased support from leading North Taranaki players. Among those competing from North Taranaki are C. Strombom, D. Ballantyne, Miss D. Lobb (New Plymouth), W. Rutherford (Waiwaka), K. F. Fookes (Fitzroy). C. Little, J. Henley, W. Short and Maclean (Park). A Wanganui contingent will also be present.

North Taranaki Ladders. Only two North Taranaki ladder matches have been played during the past week. L. Christie (New Plymouth) went up to fourth place by defeating M. Lobb (New Plymouth), who at the beginning of the season was third on the ladder. Christie played steadily and Lobb made the errors, losing 6—o, 6—l. K. P. Tompkins (New Plymouth) defended tenth place against T. Dickson (Park), whom he beat 2—6, 6—l, 11—9. Challenges pending, with the challenger’s name mentioned first, are: Miss L. Gorrie (Waitara) v. Mrs. A. J. Papps (Waiwaka) for eighth place; W. Rutherford (Waiwaka) v. M. Lobb (New Plymouth) for fifth place. Placings Up to Date.

Home Trbphy Nears End. Matches in the New Plymouth Tennis Club’s competition for Dr. Home’s trophy have progressed rapidly during the past week, with the result that the finalists have been found in one half of the draw and the semi-finalists in the other half. P. Bennett and Miss V. George (rec. 10) entered the final by defeating C. H. Strombom and Miss M. Ruby (owe 15) 50—38. R. Sampson and Miss V. Moginie are to play A. G. Johnson and Miss D. Simpson to decide the other finalists.

Park Courts Kept Busy. With the recent fine weather the Pukekura Park Club’s courts have been kept fully occupied and many championship and handicap matches have been played with the result that the competitions are nearing completion. The following are the results of matches played during the past week:— ■.l Men’s Championship Singlesi C. Little beat P. Dickson 6—l, 6—l. Ladies’ championship doubles (semifinal): Misses J. Walton and J. Medley defeated’ Mrs. Webstep and Miss M. Short 6—3, 6 —3. Combined championship doubles (semifinal); W. Dickson and Miss J. Walton defeated Crawshaw and Miss J. Medley 6—5, , 3—6, 6—3. Ladies’ handicap singles: Miss G. Walton (27) defeated Miss M.' Frethey (26) 6(1—57; Miss J. Walton (owe 27) defeated Miss Broome (25) 60—53; Miss J. Medley (owe 5) defeated Miss D. Bamham (31) 60-57.

Men’s handicap singles: R. Bullot (40) defeated C; Little (owe 27) 60—44. . Combined handicap doubles: Miss D. Pepper and Shrimpton (12) defeated Mrs., Dickson and Peel (20) 60—58; Miss N. Clark and J. Smith (30) defeated Miss P. Walton and Maclean . (scr.) 60—57; Miss J. Walton and W. Dickson (owe 15) defeated Miss Cottam and J. Hutchinson (40) 60—54. Ladies’ handicap doubles: Misses Macdonald and M. Barnham (35) defeated Misses Clarke and Tait (35) 60—52; Misses M. Henri,’ and M. Frethey (30) defeated Misses G. Baunton and G. Walton (12) 60—47.

W. I. Shrimpton, defended third place on the club ladder against a challenge from J. Henley, whom he defeated 6—l, 6—l.'

A Yankee tournament was held last Saturday, about 50 members being present. The winners were W. Short and Miss M. East . A consolation prize was won by W. Dicksori and Miss N. Ross.

Rotokare Ladder Play. There is still keen competition for places on the Rotokare Club’s ladder. The following matches have been played during the week:—R. Hawke beat J. Thomson 9—5; T. Webster beat P. Birmingham 9 —B; A. Benny beat J. Thomson 9—7; H. Lobb beat H. Rowe 9—5; R. Yeates beat H. Lobb 9—4; Mrs. Sole beat Mrs. Yeates 7—3; Miss J. Evans beat Mrs. K. Berry 7—3; Miss M. Bennett beat Miss E. Johnston .7 —5; Miss M. Sole beat Miss J. Wood T —4. The club’s championship and handicap competitions will be begun after the New Year.

Play at. Inglewood. The following ladder matches have been ■ played among the ladies of the Inglewood club; Miss Longbottom beat Miss K. Coles 7—5; Miss Eaves beat Miss Nutting 7—4; Miss C. Partridge beat Miss Eaves B—6. The results of the second round of the ladies’ handicap competition were: Miss B. Burke (20) beat Miss K. Coles (20) Miss C. Partridge (10) beat Miss M. Sutton (17) 40—34; Miss Nicholson (10) beat Miss Longbottom (10) 40—36; Miss Whittington (0) beat Miss B. Eaves (10).

Interest Among School Children. The large entries for the primary school, tournament conducted by the Hawera Club were most satisfactory. A good deal of promise was shown by the young players, some of whom showed a Wide repertoire of shots. The Hawera Club has done a lot to foster the game among the children, and this is a branch of its activities that is well worth while.

Inter-Club Games. The first fine Saturday this summer saw some interesting play .in South Taranaki inter-club games, which were mostly evenly contested. ' Most of the leading players showed good form. The Dickie brothers showed that they were at their best, losing between them only eight games in their singles and doubles. A promising player is Wylds, Eltham, who took a set off McCarthy, which is about his best performance to date. Miss J. Hicks had a close game with Miss A. Graham at Waverley, winning by an odd game. Play at Waiwaka. In ladder matches at Waiwaka during the past week G. Foden took sixth place from S. White, whom he beat 9—6, and Z-3.-ILJC V■.rc!
