BUSINESS BRISK IN HAWERA

SENSIBLE CHRISTMAS GIFTS.

EDUCATED SHOPPING TASTES.

Retailers at Hawera are well satisfied with the volume of business being done; generally things were quiet until the past few weeks, although probably comparing always more than favourably with most other New Zealand towns. During last week, and more particularly, the last two days, trade brightened considerably, so the business firms are anticipating a highly satisfactory week. There is still money about the district which people are willing to spend in the traditional manner at this time of the year.

A marked change in the attitude of most of the shoppers, however, is apparent: they are spending their money more wisely than ever before. Where some years ago the drapery shops, for example, were selling fancy perfumes and other trifles of little practical use they are now selling silk stockings, skin gloves or other useful articles; in place of fancy ties and handkerchiefs men are to be presented with useful underwear; kiddies’ blazers and shirts take the place of toys. This trend of affairs is not a thing to be deplored; on the contrary people have learned a salutory lesson and are obtaining better value for their money; it suits also the business people, who prefer to sell substantial lines rather than fancy goods which may be left on their hands.
