; SPORTS ON BREAKING-UP DAY. ; ' '■ “Jv./j-... . - ' • ' ' The closing of the. school year was marked by the Croydon school committee with the holding of. a successful sports picnic in the picturesque school ground: There was a large attendance of parents and friends. The chairman (Mr.- Vesty). presented Clifford Capper with his proficiency certificate and congratulated him on being the first pupil to pass right through the school. Nine go6d attendance certificates were presented. Mr. Vesty thanked the social club? for having, raised the funds which made possible- such an enjoyable picnic. CATHOLIC EUCHRE PARTY. PRIZE-WINNERS AT ELTHAM. There was a crowded attendance at the Eltham Catholic euchre party on Friday The prize-winners were: Mrs. Aagaard (Stratford), hamper; Mrs. Scown, ham; Mrs. Tipler, hindquarter lamb- Mrs. Hilmer, forequarter lamb; Miss’Armstrong, box of handkerchiefs; Mrs. Burgess, fowl (Miss K. Wolf, Mrs. Wilmshurst and Mrs. Beere also scored 91 points); consolation, Misss Laurence, Mr. Old, hamper; Mr. J. Taylor, ham; Mr." J.'Hawke, hindquarter lamb; Mr. FTaylor, forequarter lamb; Mr. Bush, fowl' Mr. Paon, bottle of cordials; consolation, R. Taylor. A competition for a box of sweets was won by Mr. P. Gavigan.
MIDHIRST SCHOOL BREAK-UP. LARGE ATTENDANCE OF PARENTS. The annual breaking-up ceremony was held in the school grounds on Thursday in sunny. weather with a large number of parents in attendance. The assembly was presided over by Mr. R. J. Laird, chairman of the school committee, and. associated with him were Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Polson. Mr. Laird thanked the parents for coming in such large numbers, and congratulated the teachers on their work during the year. Mr; Polson addressed the children and presented the attendance certificates, calf-rearing” medals, a cup for the best calf at the school to Mavis Laird, and medals for last year’s group to Molly
Laird 1, Len Laird 2 and W. Mills 3. Santa Claus amused the children around the Christmas tree. While afternoon tea was being, prepared the parents and visitors inspected the hundreds of useful articles made by the children from scrap cloth, sugar-bagging and rubber.
