DASH TO LIBERTY
HIGH FENCE SCALED. PRISONER AT WHANGAREI. Whangarei, Dec. 17. A prisoner, Allan Alfred Beehre, aged 30, escaped‘ from. custody at the Whangarei; police station on Wednesday evening and is , still at liberty. Beehre was arrested in Whangarei on Monday bn a warrant; of commitment to prison for default of a maintenance order and was lodged in the' lock-up at the police station pending compliance with the terms of the order of his removal to Mount-Eden gaol. ' At about 5 p.m. on Wednesday, while exercising in the backyard of the police station, he- made a sudden dash for liberty. . It is thought, that he scaled the 6ft.. corrugated iron fence enclosing the yard into the garden of an adjoining property. The police station is situated in a side street -and it would not be necessary for; him to traverse the main .thoroughfare of the town. When Beehre was discovered to -be ■ missing - a search.
