MOTUROA CHRISTMAS TREE
GIFTS FOR INFANT CHILDREN. When one of the infant rooms at the Moturoa school was opened yesterday morning it was found to contain a Christmas tree covered with gifts of all kinds —books, mechanical trains, guns, flags, balloons of all shapes and sizes, balls, sea-side buckets, spades, sweatsgifts for every primer. Upon the snow covering the ground, around the tree was a note saying that Father Christmas would visit the school at 11 a.m. Right up to time his arrival was announced, and the real treat commenced when, with a cheery word for each little one, Father Christmas handed out the gifts. ' ' Many parents were present when Father Christmas was introduced to the pupils by the headmaster. Before Father Christmas left he said that he wished to thank Mrs. Manning for the gift of a box of sweets and all those who had helped to make the gathering a success. ■•■■■■■■.
Proficiency, good attendance and sports certificates were handed to the senior pupils. A presentation of a fountain pen from the committee was made to Roy Olsen, a Standard VI. pupil who had gained most marks in the year’s term examinations. It was pointed out that as he was a second year pupil he was not eligible for dux honours. Mr. Adams, headmaster, referred to the good work done by Miss Wells, who would be leaving this year.
The following pupils gained proficiency certificates: Colin Edgecombe, Roy Olsen, Keith Nation, Hugh Edwards, Wallace Harrison, Martin Langdon, Ivan Conway, Marjorie Connett, Wyn Henchman, Thelma Hogg, Margaret Edwards, Ellie Brooks. Competency: Mabel Smith and Mervyn Loveridge.
