EMBARGO AGAINST FRUIT

IMPORTS FROM AUSTRALIA NOT AIM TO PROTECT GROWERS. MARKET ACROSS TASMAN. OTHER METHODS UNSUCCESSFUL. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. An embargo on Australian fruit and vegetables is announced by the Minister of Customs (the Hon. W. D. Stewart) tonight. It will not apply to fruit and vegetables exported from Australia on or before December 16. Mr. Stewart says the Government for a long time has unsuccessfully endeavoured to secure the removal by the Commonwealth of the embargo on New Zealand fruit and fruit plants. This embargo is very serious for New Zealand, especially during the present economic and financial crisis when the necessity for obtaining every available market for New Zealand products is paramount.: Mr. Stewart adds that the embargo is nor imposed to protect New Zealand fruitgrowers from Australian competition and will be removed at any time Australia consents to admit New Zealand fruit and fruit plants.
