COW-JUDGING CONTEST. BOYS AND GIRLS’ CLUBS AWARDS. The following results of the cow judging competitions, conducted under the auspices of the South Taranaki, Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs, have been announced by the judges:— Group 1, at Ohangai, 13 competitors: R. Green (Okaiawa) 2, Eric Green (Okaiawa) 3. ’ The judges were Messrs. H. J. Kaye and Hunt, in the Stratford and Toko groups, H. F. Wren at Eltham and H. R. Denize for the other groups. The standard of work generally at Tawhiti was higher than for any other groups, and the card put in by Peter Gould wjs considered to be outstanding over all other competitors in the groups judged by Mr.' H. R. Denize. (

MANAIA SCHOOL. MEETING OF. COMMITTEE. The school was making good progress, the standard of work presented at the recent examination • being in most cases higher than that of preceding years, stated the report of the headmaster (Mr. J. Browning) presented to' the Manaia school committee on Wednesday evening. The primary department commenced the term with 263 pupils and concluded •with 251; the figures for-the secondary department being 65 and 33 respectively. The annual sports resulted in a net profit of £1 7s 6d. Mr. Clegg and Mr. Gray would conclude their service with the school on Friday. Mr. Vinten had donated 100 asters which were planted out. The proficiency examination was held on December 1, the children presented numbering 34 including six from the Convent school. The percentage of passes was slightly higher than last - year, the work being more consistent. At the matriculation examination five children were entered and two senior pupils were recommended by the inspector for the higher learning certificate. In the standard classes few failures would be recorded. The calf rearing competition conducted by the South Taranaki Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs evolved keen interest, 13 pupils competing. " -" . At the annual sports the championships winners were Norman Chisnail and 6 Hazel Hobday. In cricket the school was showing better form, but it failed to win the cup, being defeated by Okaiawa by a few runs. The contest with Opunake had not been decided, but the final match might be played next week. The Taranaki Education' Board advised that as the anticipated role in 1933 was such as would make it impossible to. return grade V., the board had decided to keep the school in grade IVB. The matter of the annual school picnic was discussed. It was resolved that the picnic be held in the Manaia Domain, and that the matter of a gala day be left over for further consideration.
