OAKURA SCHOOL CEREMONY

FANCY DRESS BALL AND PRIZES. SOUND PROGRESS REPORTED. Tuesday night, chosen for the fancy dress dance and breaking-up ceremony of the Oakura school, could not have been bettered for weather. ’ There was a large attendance of parents and wellwishers from the surrounding districts, and the general opinion vzas that all had had a thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining evening. The judges of the fancy dresses, Mesdames Knight and Lawrence, Tataraimaka, had a difficult task awarding the prizes, but they finally decided that the best and most original costumes were worn by Nola Jury (Radio), Norah Bell (Christmas Cracker), Colin Cochran (Swagger) and Bernard Price (Danger Signal). These children were accordingly presented with books. Mrs. Knight gave an extra prize to Mavis Jury (Hawaiian). The programme included folk dances and the following items: Recitation, Joyce Kasper; songs, juniors; recitation, Nance Corbett; songs, seniors; recitation, Maisie Drake; part songs, the school; recitation, Norah Bell; action song, all. This part of the proceedings ended with a graceful but vigorous polonaise. A senior boy (Stan. Hoby) called for three cheers for Mrs. C. J. Harris, who had | played for the children’s dancing, and for cheers for the teachers and the committee. . . . Mr. R. G. Knapman (chairman) praised the fine performance of the children. He thanked the teachers for the hard work necessary to gain such a result, and spoke of the highly satisfactory report received from the inspectors, showing the sound progress made in all branches of school work during the year. Each child was presented with a book, Good attendance prizes were won by Roy Green, Tausie Drake, Vernon Mangino, Maisie Drake, Garth Hughes, Loma Drake and Ray Knapman. Special prizes (given by Miss Wells) were gained as follows: Neatness in work, Norah Bell; progress, Percy Thomas; cleanliness, Norah Bell. Owing to the thoughtfulness of Mrs. G. H. Bell, all the tiny children below school age who had come in fancy dress were presented with books. The assemblage expressed sympathy with the relatives of Miss Tess Jans, who died in hospital.
