SUCCESS AT BASKETBALL.

TOKO TEAM CONGRATULATED. “The introduction of basketball into the school by Miss M. Curd when she was teaching at Toko was not at first hailed with any great enthusiasm, but the game became established neverthe-less-and the team was developed along such sound lines that last season it won the fine range of trophies to be presented to-night,” said the chairman of the Toko school committee (Mr. T. T. Murray)' at the concert on Tuesday night. Mr. R. ■L? Hancock, Stratford, who presented "the Hancock Cup to the team for winning the Central Taranaki - B grade competition, congratulated the team on having won all the nine competition games played and on having scored 130 points with only 14 scored against them. Altogether during the season, he added, the team played 32 games, of which 27 were won and five lost, the points having been 235 for and 58 against. .... Joan Milne, captain of the team, thanked the committee for its generosity in presenting a photograph of the team to every member. Tire team members were very grateful to the teachers and to the coach, Miss Harper, for their help and to those who lent cars to convey the team to matches. On behalf of the team Joan presented a gift to Miss Harper to remind her of the team’s appreciation of what she had done. The headmaster, Mr. A. S. Harper, said he was proud of the team, not only because of their success but also because of the fine way they behaved under all circumstances.

Mr. Harper expressed appreciation of the keen manner in which the committee carried out its duties. He said there •was no doubt that the committee had the interests 'of the school at heart. The foundation of a school, he continued, lay in the infant department, for it was there that the work of shaping character was begun. The infant department at Toko. was a particularly good one and was in charge of a splendid teacher, Mrs. Chadwick. Likewise the middle classes had done excellent work under Miss Were, who was efficient and conscientious. Pupils in the upper standards had also worked very well and he would be sorry to lose the pupils who would be leaving from the sixth standard.

The Stratford committee set up to organise the celebrations in connection with the opening of the Stratford-Main Trunk railway on November 7 met last night. As the accounts had not been finalised the meeting was adjourned until finality is reached. Monarch of all he surveyed, and that was most of Broadway, a large pig ambled unconcernedly along Stratford’s chief thoroughfare yesterday morning. Now and then a car or truck would cause him to accelerate a little, but on the whole he meandered gently with little regard to traffic or people. ADVERTISERS’ ANNOUNCEMENTS.
