RATAPIKO DISTRICT NEWS

PRIZE-GIVING AT SCHOOL CONCERT An. enjoyable time was spent at the Ratapiko hall on Tuesday night when the boxing club’s dance took place. The music was played by Mr. and Mrs. C. Hall and Mr. A. Gannaway. Mr. Arthur Grigg was master of ceremonies. Extras were played by Mr. Doug. Therkleson. . The Ratapiko, school concert and prizegiving took place in the hall on Friday night. There /was a splendid attendance of parents and well-wishers 6f the school and about £5 was added to the committee’s funds. The children all acquitted themselves well, to the credit offers. W. B. Martin and the teachers who prepared the programme at such short notice. The star item of the evening was the song “Let’s grow. old together,” sweetly sung by two tiny tots, Kathleen Martin and Harry Willans. At the conclusion of the concert Mr. W./ B. Martin, chairman of the ?chool committee, thanked the people for attending in such 'large numbers. He thanked Mr.'Wells and Mr. Corlett for conveying the school football team to the various matches, the teachers,, for their co-operation in making the scheol function such a success and the ladies for their assistance in the supper room. Mr. Martin stressed that if a child was given a good education it was one thing that could never be taken from it. He appealed to the parents to keep their children at school, as if the attendance was not maintained ther? was a chance of. the school’s losing the assistant teacher. ■ Beautiful bouquets were presented to. the teachers (Mrs. 1 Winthrope and Mrs. Court) and Mrs. W. B. Martin. Masters George Karalus and Peter Gannaway presented Mrs. Winthrope with a fine book, of poems and wished her the be?t of health and happiness in the years to come. . MOTOR-CYCLE SPORTS. BOXING DAY PROGRAMME. The- Stratford Motor Sports Club has made arrangements for the track meeting to be held at Mangatoki on Boxing Day. -The programme is: Novice race (four laps), Mangatoki Handicap (four laps), open to all riders, Morgan Handicap (six laps), open to A grade riders only, lap record attempt, riders to take the track individually, and Perry Handicap (four laps), open. The following officials have been appointed: Handicappers, Messrs. G. Vickers, S. Pilkington and E. Pugh; starter, Mr. H. Joyes; course stewards, Messrs. T. Hamilton, C. Power, C. Burton, W. Pettigrew, J. Pettigrew and C. Lancashire; secretary, Mr. R. Joyes; : assistant, Mr. J. Carroll; parking steward, Mr. M. Moore. All competitors must wear crash helmets. Two new rules have been added to the list: (1) That no machine used or owned by a professional rider is to be used by amateurs (the final decision to be left to the handicapper); (2) the club captain will ride at the head ,of the file during club runs and no member may pass him without his permission. A club run will be held on January 3 to Opunake beach and home through New Plymouth. The trip will commence at 10 a.m. and riders will lunch at Opunake.

PERSONAL. The resignation of the president, Mr. R. V. Kay, was received with regret by the Stratford Swimming Club at a meeting on Tuesday night. Appreciation of the enthusiastic manner in which Mr. Kay had carried out his duties was expressed -by the committee, which conveyed to him the good wishes of the club. Mr. Kay will leave Stratford in the. near future to take up a legal position at Wellington.
