DEPARTURE OF MR. J. P. HAWKE. APPOINTMENT TO CANTERBURY. Appreciation ; of; the services of Mr. J. •P. Hawke, tor the last two years an .inspector of schools in the Taranaki education. district,' was expressed by members of the Taranaki Education Board at a morning tea held during yesterday’s meeting, hfr. Hawke- has been transferred 'by the Education Department .to the Canterbury : education district .and severs his - connection with Taranaki at the end of this year. ;’; ■ / '".' On behalf of board members, the chairman/ Mr/' S. .G. Smith/' M.P., expressed the board’s, gratitude., for ~what -Mr. Hawke had done during his short time ■in Taranaki. He. was sorry-Mr.’Hawke was leaving Taranaki. The district had always been fortunate in the inspectors if obtained. * He. had, never know , any inspector to be' a . failure in the Taranaki district and : in flatter years . he thought Taranaki .was, particularly fortunate. Mr. Hawke in leaving Taranaki, would carry away* the very best wishes • of the board- and its staff. _ The’deputy-chairman of the board, Mr. ■J. A. Valentine, joined in expressing, tbe board’s goodwill to Mr. Elawkc -and its thanks to him for his services. to education since he had been in-Taranaki. He carried on his work with great success apd, teachers appreciated His efforts, for he was like a brother among them. He had always been helpful to teachers since he came to Taranaki. Mr. Hawke would find Canterbury a happy and congenial district in which to work, Mr. Valentine added.

in reply Mr. Hawke said when he came to' Taranaki he entered on bis duties with some trepidation as Taranaki was, as it were, a training ground for him as ah inspector. He had learned a good deal of what; was done by the board in administration and of the opinion of the teachers so that he kneW how teachers appreciated the way their interests were catered tor by the board. One 5 thing that had always struck him was the close touch maintained' between the teachers and the board. Such good team work must result in efficiency. Another thing he thoughtTaranaki shriuld be proud of was the scientific training given in the schools and the rural atmosphere that was fostered throughout. - If this work. Were mot so well sponsored by the board agricultural and scientific training would not have been as successful as it had been. ' He was leaving Taranaki through no choice of his own, Mr. Hawke said. He had been very happy here and the rural outlook had made a great contribution to his own outlook. ■ ' . : ' ; -'
