NEW PLYMOUTH ATHLETICS

LEAGUE CLUB’S EVENING SPORTS. SPLENDID PROGRAMME AT PARK. A splendid, and varied athletic programme was conducted last; evening, in Pulrekura Park, New Plymouth, it being the fourth of the summer series under the auspices of the New Plymouth Cycle and Athletic League.

Officials present were: Judges, Messrs F. E. Orbell and G. Tippins; referee, Mr. G. Sole; secretary,' Mr. D. George; starter, Mr. R. Wilson; handicapper, Mr. L. E. Smith; marksmen, Messrs L. Claffey, H. Bocock and J. Sceats.

Results are:— Cycling, B grade, one mile and a-half: B. Sole (30yds) 1, Doug. George (scr) 2, B. Berryman (10yds) 3. Also started: W. Jury (40yds), J. Gillies (15yds). Time, Ini. 12 l-ss. Sole led all the. way. The back boys closed up quickly over the last half-lap. Sole won by inches, from George, who beat Berryman on the post for second. Cycling, A Grade, half mile: H. Eva (70yds) 1, D. Beer (25yds) 2, G. Sole (70yds) 3. Also started: G. Plucke (70 yds), A. Ellis (25yds), J. Gillies (85yds), B. Berryman (85yds). Time, Im. 6 l-ss. Sole led over the last lap but Eva took .the lead' over the last bit to win by a length from Beer, with ■ Sole a length away. Cycling, A Grade, one mile: A. Ellis (50yds) l. H. Eva (120yds). 2, R. Yardley (50yds) 3. Also started: G. Plucke (100 yds), L. Lambeth (180yds),. G. Tuffery (100yds), D. Beer (60yds). Time, 2m. 20s. Lambeth led for three and a-half laps. The back men caught Eva, Tuffery and Plucke in two laps. Ellis took the lead with half a lap to go and won by a length. Cycling, two miles “miss and out scratch race: D. Beer 1, R. Yardley 2, G. Tuffery 3. Also started: J. Gillies, L.’ Lambeth, H. Eva, G. Plucke and B. Sole. _ Won by a tyre. At the end of every second lap the last man past the post was called off. Gillies, Sole, Lambeth and Eva dropped out in that order and Tuffery led on the last lap from Beer. Beer eventually won by a very narrow margin from Yardley, with Tuffery a few lengths back. Running, 75 yards: W. Aubrey (6yds) 1, S. Wilson (—) 2, E. Bowen (—) 3. Also started: G. Fowler (syds), R. Wilson (—), S. Rogers (Byds) 3. Won by a foot, the same distance between second and third. Time, 7 4-ss.

Running, 300 yards: E. Bowen 1, S. Wilson, 2, W. Aubrey (40yds) 3. Also started: C. Tippins (40yds), S. Rogers (47yds),. A. Reeves (55yds), G. Fowler (35yds), N. Gordon (50yds). Won by two yards, inches between second and third. Time, 28 2-ss. Running, 880 yards: W. Aubrey (70yds) 1, E. Bowen 2, W. Gordon (85yds) 3. Also started: A. Reeve (80yds), C. Tippins (70yds), S. Rogers (75yds). Aubrey won in a very close finish. Rogers was a good fourth. Time, 2m. ,7s. Points for the running points prize and runner-up prize are: Aubrey 18, Lowe 10, Gordon 9, Bowen 6, Fowler 5, S. Wilson 4. Walk, one lap (all scratch): B. Berryman 1, Also started: H. Eva, G. Tuffery, Des. George, N. Gordon, J. Gillies, G. Plucke and S. Rogers. Tqffery crossed the line first but was disqualified for “breaking.” Children’s races: Girls’ 75 yards, S. Hawke 1, A.
