MOTOR-CYCLE SPORTS

flying quarter mile. FENTON’S HAMILTON SUCCESS. (By “Speed.”) A flying quarter-mjle test conducted by the Stratford Motor Sports Club on December 4 attracted eleven entries. New, Plymouth riders fared exceptionally well, gaining both first and second places ip the amateur event with averages that compared favourably with those of the professionals, S- Bird on his Scott did just qn 8Q miles per how, while J. Holmes (Norton) did almost 77 miles per how. The winning machine in the professional event was a Norton ridden by J. Hamilton at an average speed of over 89 miles per hour. J. Dickson, on an Ariel, was the next best with 80.108 miles per hour. Had the weather been more suitable higher speeds would have been recorded, as a stiff side wind slowed the machines to some extent. The brilliant performance of J. Fenton at the recent grass track meeting, at Claudelands has been widely discussed of late. By winning the New Zealand lightweight ■ championship this rider proved definitely that a very successful future is assured him in- this phase of sport. In addition- to the championship first place was gained by-a considerable margin in the Novice Handicap, while- second place was secwed in the Waikato Handicap from -a start of only 5s from Ben Bray. The latter has had a = great deal of experience at. racing ■ and will certainly- have to.- look to his - laurels-- in the near future ■ At a smoke concert held by the Hamilton. club in the evening, the president, in proposing the toast of the New, Plymouth rider, spoke appreciatively of his splendid performance and predicted a brilliant future at the sport. Keen interest is being evinced by motor-cyclists in general toward the next meeting of Fenton’s machine with some of the fast models that Turk- hi the neighbourhood of Stratford. A flying quartermile with all the fast machines competing should prove both interesting and enlightening, and will be eagerly, await-

ed by the various Taranaki clubs. In the meantime .it'is hoped that the acceleration tesi this week will see all these machines in action. . Jack Hamilton was experienced trouble which put him out of the running in the H* HandL cap. At the time he appeared a certain winner with only one and a half laps to go and a good lead in his favour. K. Goodin rode well to gain third place in the Middleweight Handicap. His nering. in the opinion of some witnesses, Setter tan.W ton. With two riders of their gg competing in grass track events it should not be long before Taranaki figures prominently in the prize In common with several other‘ ?PO?S clubs in New Plymouth, the North Tara naki Motor-Cycle Club is to augment its funds. So far the c u has met with a generous response from the public, and the day is ? uroaching when the committee will be Sk to organise a grass track meeting on the lines of those run by the old New Plymouth Club. This is the goal for which club members are striving, and every increase of the funds brings -t ne Z SS* executive on Tuesday evening a discussion Lok place over the possibility of the three clubs organising a grass track me< |tmg. It was decided that the of the old Haw'era club be sought.,and a repre sentative from the prised to approach Mr- Sprag& to see what could be done in matter.
