WANGANUI, MARTON, PAPANUI ONE STRAYS INTO THE SURF. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Dec. 12. Derek Leslie Mitchell, the three-year-old son of W. L. Mitchell, of .Papanui, was found drowned in the surf at the Waikuku Beach early this morning after an all night search. He strayed from sandhills while playing with other children yesterday evening. A Wanganui messages states tha's George Burton Phillips, aged / 13, was drowned on Saturday afternoon through the capsize of a Rob Roy canoe, in which, with another boy, Richardson, he was crossing a lake' at Fordell. Phillips was unable to swim. Richardson reached the shore in an exhausted condition. Phillips’ body was recovered. A Marton message states that on Saturday afternoon the 18-months-old son of H. Hall, of Kaikarangi, Hunterville, was found drowned under a bridge crossing the Porewa stream. The child had been playing with his mother, who left him to look after some cows. The stream was in high flood and the child apparently slipped in above the bridge, the body being found wedged under the decking.
