NO RHODES SCHOLARS?

It doubtless came as a surprise to many people to learn that after examining the nominated candidates the Rhodes Scholarship selection committee decided to make no award this year, with the result that for the first time New Zealand is not represented in the select band. The funds still permit of two awards in New Zealand annually, and the fact that the committee deliberated such a long time this year before announcing its decision indicates that the calibre of the nominees was not considered sufficiently high to warrant an award. Only five candidates were presented, it is true, in comparison with eight normally, but it seems a strange thing, particularly when one takes stock of the candidates who have been awarded the distinction in the past, that from all the New Zealand University Colleges not one student can be found with sufficiently high qualifications to satisfy the examining committee.

It may be argued that the stress of the times is having its effect on. the young men of to-day, but surely adversity should bring out the best in national character, not the worst. The purpose of the Rhodes scholarship is to give encouragement to the genuine “all-rounder.” Scholastic attainment, success in sport and qualities of general citizenship are all taken into account, and rightly so; yet while a number of former, Rhodes scholars have achieved considerable distinction in after life, Taranaki in this respect having a particularly creditable record, it cannot be denied that many have not justified the great trust reposed in them or profited by the privileged opportunity. The examining committee has given no reason for rejecting the claims of all the nominees, and in the absence of such explanation one may be excused for wondering whether the committee is really in touch with the youth of the present generation. If it is it does not say much for young New Zealand.
