ACCLIMATISATION ACTIVITIES
PHEASANTS NEAR INGLEWOOD. The Taranaki Acclimatisation Society has a large number of pheasants’ eggs in process of hatching, and the farmers between Durham and Dudley Roads are assisting the society by rearing the birds. Although they are being fed the birds are allowed to run wild so that as they develop they will forage for themselves. Next season the Acclimatisation Society wishes to make the area between Durham and Dudley Roads a sanctuary for the shooting months to give the pheasants a proper chance of becoming established. The following year it is hoped to open the district for several weeks during the shooting season. In the locality run the three branches of the Ngatoro River, the banks of which are well covered with shelter bush, so that, once established, the birds should have a fair chance. The work of the society in liberating fish is proceeding. Stony River has had its full quota of 8000 fingerlings, and the Waiwakaiho has had a similar number. There are 2000 yet to be put into the Opunake hydro-electric lake, and there are still 6000 not allocated. The quota for the Inglewood streams will be liberated in a short time. The officials of the society state that the fingerlings are in an exceptionally good condition and should prove a far better paying proposition than the fry that have been liberated in the past. The extra three months in the hatchery have proved of great value in avoiding the mortality so prevalent among the tiny fish. i
