CALF-REARING COMPETITION

JUDGING RESULTS YESTERDAY. SOUTH TARANAKI SCHOOLS. The judging-of calves in the children’s competitions was continued yesterday by Messrs. E. J. Betts (judging dairy type), W. B. Fearon (condition) and Rod Syme (chart). At Te Kiri Mr. W. Coxhead thanked the judges on behalf of the parents for the interest they had taken in the competitions. , : At Awatiina the judging party was entertained at morning tea. At Riverlea luncheon was provided by the ladies and at Auroa Mrs. Fairbrother was hostess at aftemon tea. Results are:—

NORMANBY SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

BREAKING-UP ARRANGEMENTS. A meeting of the Normanby . School Committee was held on Monday,' when there were present Mr .W. H. Bennett (chairman), Mrs. W. G. Gane, Messrs. W. Burton, J. Howe-Giles and C. W. Hardway and the Rev. J. Watson (secretary). The headmaster (Mr. T. Taylor) reported that the attendance was steady. The proficiency and annual examinations were being held and the judging of the boys’ and girls’ club’s calf-rearing entries was to take place at the school on Friday. The service officer of the South Taranaki Automobile Association (Mr. J. McKee) had attended the school and given-ain" instructive address to the children • regarding a traffic sense, and he established patrols at the several danger zones -near the school. The material had arrived for the new deck tennis. A social and sale of work had been arranged by the school Red Cross Society.- ' \ ‘ . ' '.' X 1 ' ; ? Howe-Giles and Bin-ton reported.'having, met the teachers to discuss the proposed breakingup ceremony and deciding that the committee , should be .responsible for the afternoon tea while the' teachers should arrange the afternoon’s programme. The function would take the.fform of a garden fete, sale of work and a Christmas tree for the tiny tots. ■ Mr- Howe-Giles’ offered; to provide a Christmas cake' for competition to raise funds for sweets to be given to the children. His offer was accepted with thanks.

PERSONAL. A large number of young'people paid a surprise visit to the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Deegan, ’ Auroa, in the weekend; to celebrate the birthday of their son, Mr. Martin Deegan. The time was pleasantly spent with music, and games of all kinds in the drawing room and dining room, and on the spacious lawn. Mr. R. Henderson, and Mr., K. Pope, of the Sydney staff of the Commonwealth Bank, are visiting Taranaki. They are the guests ;of. Mr, Pope’s mother, Mrs. Pope, Kakaramea. . Recognition of the sendees of Mr. B. Parkinson, for 21 years director of the Waverley Co-op. Dairy Company, was made at a social gathering on Monday night. Mr. W. MacFarlane, chairman of directors, presided and made a presentation of an entree dish. Mr. F. Johnston, another- director, spoke of the excellent service given by Mr. Parkinson,'the remainder of the directorate, Mr. J. Gray (secretary) and Mr. A. Smith (Farmers’ Co-op. Organisation Society) "■ also paying their tributes. A feature of the gathering was the long association of those present with the. company; Mr. MacFarlane has been a director for 21 years, Mr. Gray, secretary for a similar period, and Mr/ J. Nicholls (the manager) has held 'his position ever since the company commenced operations. , . . GENERAL ITEMS. / A recital in aid of the funds of the Hawera branch of the Red Cross Society was given on Monday by pupils of Miss G. Gamman and assisting artists.
