POOR BATTING DISPLAY
HAWKE’S BAY AND WELLINGTON. . FIRST REPRESENTATIVE MATCH* By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Weak batting marked the first representative cricket match played at Wellington this season, when a touring Hawke’s Bay team met a Wellington eleven. Though the wicket was firm and the outfield fast, Hawke’s Bay could reach only 122, the, batsmen making a poor showing against the 'bowling of Dennis Blundell, the ex-Cambridge Col-, lege player, who swung the ball both ways in taking six for 48 off 13.5 overs. Ellis (35) and Browne (27)' were the. only batsmen to get going. Wellington did • little better in their first innings, being all dismissed for 253. H. Foley (66) and C. S. Dempster (58) were the only batsmen to show form, against the bowling of H. Reaney, who . captured five wickets for 57 runs. Hawke’s Bay in their second innings scored nine without loss. ” Unless both Wellington and Hawke’s Bay can produce better form than they showed today they will find both Gtago and Canterbury too good for them this season.
