EAST COMMITTEE MEETING. f ROAD METALLING DISCUSSED. The monthly meeting of the East Committee of the Egmont National Park Board was held at Stratford last night, Mr. J. C. Robins presiding. The chairman said he inquired of the Public Works Department if it would be possible to have the road to the Stratford Plateau m'etalled by relief labour under the supervision of the department, and was told that in view of the difficulties of transport and supervision it would be advisable to leave' the matter over in the meantime. Mr. Robins knew members of the committee would feel pleased at having completed the formation of the road to the plateau. There was still much to be done and it was desirable that the road be metalled so that it could be kept open at all times. The thanks of the committee were due to all those who assisted the committee in the past and those who helped it to have the road ready for the opening. The question of the future was wrappeded up in finance. The district and the road gained much publicity on November 7 and the presence of so many members of the Government would help in soliciting their, aid in further projects and in including & trip to east Egmont among the tours listed by the Tourist Department. The Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. A. Hamilton) said on

the opening day that assistance would be given, and it was to be hoped the committee would receive a grant from the next art union. If the committee’s plans were outlined fully Mr. Robins thought favourable consideration would be given to an application for a grant. Since the opening, Mr. Robins said, at least one car from outside the district visited the resort every day. Sundays, although all but one since the opening were wet, had attracted good numbers in view of the conditions. He hoped the opening of the railway would induce parties from Auckland to pay week-end visits to Stratford and east Egmont. “One member of Parliament told me the opening ceremony at the mountain was the climax to a good day,” Mr. W. L. Kennedy said. Mr. J. C. Allen mentioned that Mrs. J. G. Coates in a letter expresesd her deep enjoyment of the mountain func- ■ tion. '

The chairman added he had no doubt the top road could be kept in good order until it was properly metalled. He had been approached by the Stratford Motor Sports Club which wanted to hold a motor-cycle hill climb over the road, and it might be possible to hold a competition for light cars. The trouble was that unless some arrangement could be reached whereby a portion of the tolls could be given to the body organising any function at the mountain such body would find it difficult to meet the expenses.

The position will be placed before the Park Board and permission sought to give a percentage of the tolls to any body that organises sports on the mountain.

The secretary stated that the revenue for October was £lO 13s. 6d. (£l6 19s. for October, 1931). The wet weather was the cause of the decrease, which was the first for any month this year. Thanks for his letter of congratulation to the committee on its achievement and for his donation were extended to the chairman of the Park Board (Mr. T. C. List).

The desirability of compiling a complete history of east Egmont was mentioned by the chairman. “I do not know even who built the old house on the plateau,” he said. The chairman suggested that it might bq possible to persuade the Railway Department to run excursion trips to Stratford and then to transport the people by bus and lorry to east Egmont. It was decided to confer with bus and lorry owners before approaching the department.

In view of the increased traffic on Pembroke Road from the factory to the reserve and the consequent increase in maintenance costs and the dust nuisance, the committee decided to seek the aid of the Stratford County Council in asking the Highways Board to bitumenise the surface of the road.
